June 7, 2017 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Sioux Falls Stampede
Sioux Falls, SD--The Sioux Falls Stampede will host their 2017 Tryout Camp this weekend, June 10-13, at the Scheels IcePlex in Sioux Falls. Nearly 100 players will be vying for a spot on the Stampede roster for the 2017-18 season. The camp will bring players and their families from all over the United States and other countries to Sioux Falls for a long weekend. The four-day event will also include an opportunity for players and their families to tour the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, the home of the Stampede. The Stampede led the USHL in attendance for a fifth straight season last year, averaging over 6,300 fans per-game.
The Stampede will have nine returning players in camp, including Luverne native Jaxon Nelson who posted 18 points (7g, 11a) in 54 games as a 16-year-old. Other returning forwards include Matt Quercia, Khristian Acosta, Nick Bowman and Grant Reichenbacher. Defensively, Paul DeNaples enters camp as the Stampede's top returning defenseman after tallying 17 points (7g, 10a) in 55 games. Jack St. Ivany, Colin Swoyer, AJ Villella and recently acquired Clark Cup champion Corson Green will also attend.
The Stampede will also welcome their top three draft choices in May's USHL Draft, including Carson Dimoff who finished last season as the third leading scorer for Aberdeen (NAHL) with 51 points (19g, 32a) in 58 regular season games and followed that up with 9 points (4g, 5a) in 12 playoff games. The Scottsdale, AZ native has already committed to St. Lawrence University. Also expected to participate in camp is the Herd's first round selection of the USHL Phase I Draft (3rd overall), Ryan Johnson. The Irvine, CA native spent last season with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks U16 team where he posted 24 points (3g, 21a) in 32 games. At just 15-years-old, Johnson is the highest drafted Californian in the USHL and is the son of former University of Minnesota Golden Gopher and NHL'er Craig Johnson.
Tryout camp scrimmages will take place at The Furniture Mart rink inside the Scheels IcePlex throughout camp and all activities are free and open to the public. The Stampede Pro Shop will also be open during camp for fans to purchase merchandise. The 2017-18 training camp roster will be selected at the conclusion of camp. All USHL teams are required to submit their 30-man protected roster by July 9th for
camp in early September. All USHL teams must trim their rosters to 23 players prior to the start of the regular season in October.
