Stampede Swept in Waterloo

Waterloo, IA - The Sioux Falls Stampede scored first, but the Waterloo Black Hawks proved to be too tough Saturday night as the Herd fell 4-1 to the Black Hawks at Young Arena and were swept in their weekend series. The Stampede finished their five-game road swing 0-5-0 and are now 17-19-2 on the season and tied for sixth place in the Western Conference, just two points back of fourth place Waterloo. Lean Bergmann tallied the Herd's lone goal while Stefanos Lekkas stopped 38 of 42 shots in goal.
After a tough 5-2 loss the night before, the Herd knew that getting the first goal of the game would be important and the Herd would do just that 11 minutes into the contest. Parker Tuomie sent a pass out to the high slot for Justin Wells who blasted a shot on goal that was stopped by Waterloo goaltender Cale Morris, but the rebound bounced to Lean Bergmann who quickly wristed the puck into the back of the net to give the Herd their first lead of the weekend at 1-0. Unfortunately for the Herd, the lead would not last as the Black Hawks responded just over three minutes later when Nick Swaney wristed a shot from the right point that caught Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas by surprise and found the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. The Herd would head into the second period on the power play, but were outshot in the first 10-9.
The Herd were unable to score on the power play and it was sign of things to come in the period that was controlled by the Hawks. Waterloo took the lead 5:13 of the period, pouncing on a loose rebound and putting away the puck to make it a 2-1 game. It remained that way until the 14:47 mark when the Hawks converted again, this time on the power play. Nick Swaney took a pass in the high slot and blasted a shot through traffic and past Lekkas to extend the Hawks lead to 3-1. The Herd were in their own zone for much of the period and were outshot 21-11 during the 2nd. Much like the first, the Herd ended the period on a power play that saw 21 seconds carry over into the third.
Sioux Falls couldn't convert, but Waterloo did just seconds after their penalty expired. Liam Pecararo found Nick Swaney open in the slot and Swaney wristed a shot perfectly into the upper right hand corner of the net just 1:40 into the period to give the Hawks a 4-1 edge. The Stampede would try and battle back, posting seven shots on goal and a couple of near misses, but couldn't find the back of the net and the Herd were swept away in Waterloo.
The Black Hawks outshot the Herd 42-27 on the night and went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Herd went 0-for-3.
The Stampede return home next Friday and Saturday to host Lincoln and Des Moines at the PREMIER Center. Friday is Faith and Family Night with Restoration Generation and Saturday is Special Olympics Night, presented by Modern Woodmen of America. Game times are 7:05 PM each night and tickets are available through the KELOLAND Box Office at the PREMIER Center or any Ticketmaster location.
