Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Dubuque, IA-The Sioux Falls Stampede rallied from a 3-1 second period deficit to top the second best team in the USHL, Dubuque, 4-3 in a shootout Saturday night at Mystique Ice Center. The win gave the Stampede three of a possible four points on the weekend and moved them into fourth place in the Western Conference with a 23-22-4 record with 11 games remaining in the regular season. The Herd hold a one point lead over Omaha and two points over Fargo who play at Des Moines on Sunday.

Eric MacAdams, Joe Rutkowski and Josh Passolt all scored in regulation for the Stampede while MacAdams and Parker Tuomie scored in the three round shootout for Sioux Falls while Stefanos Lekkas had yet another stellar performance in goal stopping 37 of 40 shots during the game and 2 of 3 shots in the shootout.

On Friday night it was the Herd who came out strong in the first, but on Saturday the Fighting Saints showed they were ready to play from the puck drop. They outshot the Herd early and found the back of the net at 10:23 of the period when Shane Kavanagh sent a pass into the slot for Petter Makitalo who quickly slapped the puck past the glove side of Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas to give the Fighting Saints a 1-0. The Stampede would respond with a goal of their own at 17:34 of the period when Eric MacAdams tallied his sixth of the season. Jack Doremus cleared the puck out of the Stampede by banking it off the left wing boards as the puck bounced into the offensive zone, sending Dubuque goaltender Jaxon Castor out of the net. MacAdams beat Castor to the puck and danced around the goaltender before blasting the puck into the net to tie the game 1-1. Dubuque outshot the Herd 10-6 in the period.

The Fighting Saints gained back the momentum early in the second period when Nathan Sucese benefited off a bounce from Lekkas that allowed him to get a quick shot off into the net to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. It stayed that way until the 16:13 mark of the period when Spenser Young scored on the power play to extend that lead to 3-1 and things weren't looking too good for the Herd. Sioux Falls once again showed they have no quit though and battled back. The Herd pulled within a goal at 17:54 when Jack Becker sent a pass into the slot for Joe Rutkowski who came streaking down the middle of the ice and slapped the puck into the upper left hand corner of the net to make it a 3-2 game. The Herd weren't done yet though as they pulled even with just 22 seconds remaining in the period when Parker Tuomie won a puck battled in the right wing boards and sent a pass in front of the net to Josh Passolt who made a nice move and backhanded the puck through the pads of Castor to tie the game 3-3 after two periods. Dubuque outshot the Herd 17-8 in the period.

The third period featured some good scoring chances on both ends with the Stampede outshooting the Fighting Saints 11-9, but neither team would score forcing overtime.

After neither team was able to convert in the extra session the game went into a shootout where the Herd got goals from Eric MacAdams and Parker Tuomie to take a 2-1 lead heading into round 3. After Josh Passolt's shot clanked off the goal post the Saints had one more chance, but Lekkas stacked the pads and stopped Petter Makitalo to earn the shootout win 2-1 and the game 4-3.

Dubuque outshot the Herd 40-28 in the game and went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Herd were 0-for-3. Sioux Falls continues their road swing next weekend when they travel to Madison and Waterloo, Friday and Saturday night. Game times are 7:05 PM each night and the games can be heard on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 107.9-FM and KELO.COM.
