Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Sioux City, IA-The Sioux Falls Stampede earned a point in the standings in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Sioux City Musketeers Saturday night at the Tyson Events Center. Jack Becker tallied the only goal in the loss for the Herd while Jeremy Swayman helped earn the Stampede a point with and outstanding performance in goal, stopping 47 shots on the night. The Herd are now 2-2-1 on the season while the Musketeers improved to 3-2-0.

After an entertaining scoreless first period that saw each team post 12 shots, the Musketeers grabbed the first goal of the game just 40 seconds in when Phillip Knies scored. Jacob Wilson's shot in the slot was stopped by Stampede goaltender Jeremy Swayman, but the rebound bounced off his right pad and onto the stick of Knies who quickly wristed it into the net before Swayman could reach it. That gave the Musketeers some energy and they controlled play for the next five minutes, but the Stampede held strong and kept it a one goal game. The Herd tied the game at 9:34 of the second when Alex Stevens blast from the right point was deflected in front of the net by Jack Becker past Sioux City netminder Matiss Kivlenieks to make it a 1-1 game. From there it was exciting back-and-forth action between the two teams, but Swayman stole the show with some amazing pad and glove saves that kept the Musketeers off the board and the game at 1-1 through the end of 40 minutes. Sioux City outshot the Herd 21-9 in the period.

The excitement continued in the third as the as both goaltenders continued to play stellar between the pipes. Sioux City threw 14 more shots on Swayman who continued to shut down the Musketeers offense while the Herd put 12 shots on the board, but Kivlenieks was up to the task and turned aside every shot to keep the game 1-1 at the end of regulation.

Sioux Falls was awarded a power play in the overtime and went on 4-on-3 advantage for two minutes, posting three shots, but couldn't solve Kivlenieks who continued his strong play and helped his teammates kill off the penalty. Both teams had a couple of chances later in the overtime, but were unable to convert and the game headed into a shootout.

The Stampede sent three shooters in the shootout, but Jaxon Nelson, Eric MacAdams and Austin Albrecht were all denied. Swayman stopped the first two Sioux City shooters, but first round NHL draft prospect Eeli Tolvanen brought the puck between the circles and perfectly wristed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Musketeers the 1-0 victory in the shootout and 2-1 in the game.

Sioux City outshot the Herd 48-35 on the night and finished 0-for-3 on the power play while the Stampede also finished the evening at 0-for-3.

Sioux Falls returns to action on Friday when they host the Dubuque Fighting Saints at the PREMIER Center at 7:05 PM. Tickets are available through the PREMIER Center or any Ticketmaster outlet. Group, suite and season tickets are still available by contacting the Stampede office at 336-6060.
