Stampede Blitz Storm with Three Goals in Second

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Tri-City Storm (12-13-1) had a 2-1 lead after the first period but allowed three goals in the second to the Sioiux Falls Stampede (17-8-1) and fell 6-3 on Friday night at the Sioux Falls Arena.

The Storm got help from defenseman Cutler Martin, who scored his second goal of the season and picked up an assist on a first period goal by Trevor Moore.

Sioux Falls took an early lead in the first period on a goal by Sam Rothstein, but the Storm were able to get two goals in the ladder half of the frame took a 2-1 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.

Trevor Moore got his twelfth goal of the season when he took a pass from Tayler Munson and beat Sioux Falls goaltender Charlie Lindgren with a wrist shot with from the top of the left circle to get the Storm on the board at 16:14. Martin picked up the second assist on the goal.

Tri-City took the lead just a few minutes later when they capitalized on a Stampede penalty. Forward Grant Opperman got his sixth goal of the season, finding a loose puck in front of the net and sweeping it past Lindgren. For Opperman, the goal is his fourth in his last three games. All four of his tallies have come on power play opportunities.

But the second period was dominated by Sioux Falls. The Herd got three goals in the frame and put themselves in front 4-2. It was a deficit that the Storm could not recover from.

Sioux Falls forward Tony Calderone scored two of three Stampede goals in that second frame.

Martin scored a goal off an offensive zone face-off late in the third period to keep Tri-City in the game, but an empty net goal from Zeb Knutson sealed the deal for the Stampede on a 6-3 win.

Tri-City now heads to Fargo and will look to defeat the Foce for the first time this season on Saturday night. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. The Storm will return to the Viaero Event Center next Friday, Dec. 28 to do battle with the Lincoln Stars. That game will get underway at 7:30 p.m.
