St. Louis Rams Sign Simpkins
December 8, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Green Bay Blizzard News Release
Former Green Bay Blizzard and Green Bay Packers linebacker Maurice Simpkins was signed to the St. Louis Rams practice squad on Wednesday December 8th. He will wear number 54 for the Rams. A spot on the roster became available when linebacker Na'il Diggs was lost for the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral muscle.
Simpkins (6'1, 236 lbs.) joins the Rams after opening the 2010 season with the Green Bay Packers. He was brought into Packers training camp on August 10th and saw limited playing time in the Packers first preseason game against the Browns. Simpkins played mainly on Special Teams through the first three weeks of preseason action contributing with several tackles on the Kick Cover team. It was not until the final preseason game in Kansas City that Simpkins saw considerable playing time with the second team defense. Against the Chiefs, Simpkins had a team high eight tackles (seven solo) and one of them for a loss. Simpkins finished preseason play second on the team in tackles with 13 and 12 of which were solo.
Simpkins was signed to the Packers practice squad on Monday September 6th and was moved to the active roster October 7th. He appeared in two games with the Packers before being released on October 26th.
Maurice had an outstanding year this past season for the Blizzard. He was named First Team All-IFL Defense. He had 126 total tackles, 5 sacks, 5 interceptions (2 returned for touchdowns) 3 passes broken up and 1 forced fumble. Simpkins was the leader of the Blizzard defense all season long. Simpkins lead the IFL in solo tackles with 85, but his most impressive stat was his league leading 10 blocked field goals. Simpkins was named the 2010 IFL Most Improved Player.
