Squirrels Send Three to Eastern League All-Star Game

June 30, 2016 - Eastern League (EL1)
Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

Richmond, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, are proud to announce that three players are headed to the Eastern League All-Star Game on July 13 at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio. Leading the group are the Giants' two top prospects in infielder Christian Arroyo and RHP Tyler Beede. Third baseman Ryder Jones, a second round draft choice in 2013, also receives the first Midseason All-Star selection of his career after winning a fans vote. IF Ali Castillo and RHP Tyler Rogers were also selected to represent the Western Division initially, but both players were recently called up to Triple-A Sacramento and are no longer eligible.

Arroyo came into the 2016 season ranked as the Giants number one overall prospect by Baseball America despite being one of the youngest players in the Eastern League. Spending most of his time at shortstop, the 21-year-old leads the Eastern League with 22 doubles. He's already had two separate 10-game hitting streaks while occasionally playing both second and third base. Arroyo has spent time in big league camp during spring training each of the last two years and was named to the Arizona Fall League's All-Prospect team in 2015. He was the 25th overall selection in the 2013 June draft out of Hernando High School in Brooksville, Florida.

Joining Arroyo in Akron is Tyler Beede, who's been the Flying Squirrels de facto ace all season after receiving the Opening Day start. The Giants #2 overall prospect is currently tied for third in the Eastern League with a 2.71 ERA while sporting a 5-4 record. In two of the best starts of his career at the Diamond, Beede had a no-hitter and perfect game broken up, respectively, with two outs in the sixth inning against the Baysox (June 2) and RubberDucks (June 29). Beede was the 14th overall pick by the Giants in the 2014 June draft out of Vanderbilt University.

Ryder Jones was the Giants second round pick after Arroyo in 2013, giving them two high school infielders with their top two picks. The pair has risen through the organization together on the left side of the infield, and has been crucial in some of the Squirrels offensive spurts throughout the season. Spending most of his time at third base, Jones has flashed a rocket of an arm while occasionally filling in admirably at first base. He's also hit for considerably more power in the Eastern League, already topping last year's home run total with eight longballs. Jones is also tied for the Flying Squirrels team lead with 34 runs batted in while batting mostly third or fifth in the lineup.

The 2016 Eastern League All-Star Game will be held at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio on July 13 at 7:05 PM. The game represents the final day of a three-day break for the Eastern League. The Flying Squirrels' annual 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza will kick off a seven-game homestand after this weekend's series in Trenton. The full promotional schedule can be found here.
