Springfield Armor News Release

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Armor, presented by MGM Springfield, defeated the Santa Cruz Warriors 111-100 in front of 4,359 fans at the MassMutual Center tonight.

The Armor (8-15) and Warriors (15-9) were tied 16-16 at the 5:17 mark in the first quarter, but a runner by Brooklyn Nets' assignee Tyshawn Taylor gave Springfield an 18-16 advantage and the Armor never looked back. Springfield finished the first quarter on an 11-3 run to stretch a three-point lead to an 11-point edge (34-23). Fellow Brooklyn Nets' assignee Toko Shengelia scored 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting with five rebounds in the frame.

Springfield stayed hot in the second quarter behind a brilliant performance from Taylor. Taylor tallied 12 points in the quarter on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting as the Armor extended their lead to a game-high 24 points (66-42) with three minutes left in the first half. The Warriors closed the gap with a 10-3 run to end the half, but Springfield still managed to head into intermission with a 69-52 advantage. The 69 first-half points were a season-high for the Armor.

In the third, the Warriors were never able to get closer than 13 points as the Armor rode another big quarter from Shengelia (10 points on 3-of-4 shooting) to an 89-73 lead through three quarters.

The Warriors burst out of the gate in the fourth quarter and finally trimmed the deficit to single digits with an 11-3 run over the first 3:17 of the period. The lead would fluctuate between single digits and double digits for much of the quarter, but a Hilton Armstrong layup and a pair of free throws from Darington Hobson brought the Warriors within five points (101-96) with 2:36 to go. With the game closer than at any point since the first quarter, the Armor responded. James Mays ripped off eight of the final 10 Springfield points to help the Armor hold off the Warriors and capture their second straight victory.

Tyshawn Taylor led all scorers with 26 points (20 in the first half) on 11-of-22 shooting in 39 minutes. Taylor has now tallied 20+ points in all three of his NBA D-League games this season. Shengelia recorded his second straight double-double with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting with 13 rebounds in 37 minutes. Shengelia is now averaging 28.3 points on .646 shooting, 13.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game in his three NBA D-League contests. Willie Reed added his third double-double of the season with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and a season-high 13 rebounds in 32 minutes, James Mays contributed 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and nine rebounds in 36 minutes, Ben Uzoh chipped in eight points and nine assists with zero turnovers in 45 minutes and Carleton Scott came off the bench to pour in 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting in 26 minutes.

Darington Hobson led the way for the Warriors tonight with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 29 minutes. Maurice Baker added 15 points in 36 minutes, Hilton Armstrong tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in 30 minutes, Stefhon Hannah posted 13 points in 30 minutes and Edwin Ubiles tossed in 10 points in 20 minutes.

The Armor's 111 points tonight were the second-most scored against the Warriors this season. Santa Cruz entered tonight's game surrendering an NBA D-League-low 94.2 points per game. Springfield also earned a 47-34 edge on the glass and a 58-48 advantage in points in the paint.

The Armor return to action in search of their third straight victory tomorrow when they take on the Maine Red Claws at 3:00 pm at the Portland Expo.
