Springfield Cardinals News Release

Tulsa, OK - The Cardinals came up with a big 3-1 win last night over Tulsa as Scott McGregor threw seven solid innings to earn the victory. Springfield sent left hander Nick Additon to the mound on Thursday looking to bounce back after two straight tough outings.

Springfield wasted no time getting to start Jonnathan Aristil as Daryl Jones launched the first pitch of the game over the right field wall for a solo home run. With two outs, Andrew Brown and Aaron Luna drew walks before Xavier Scruggs doubled into right center field to score both to take a 3-0 lead. Jose Garcia followed with a two-run homer to left, his 5th of the year, to put the Cardinals in front 5-0.

Nick Additon came out in the bottom of the 1st and walked the lead off batter before allowing a two-run home run to Jason Van Kooten to bring the Drillers within three runs, 5-2. Jordan Pacheco then doubled before Additon retired the next two batters. With two outs, Jeff Kindel doubled to right field to score Pacheco to make it a 5-3 game.

The Cardinals offense got back to work in the 3rd as they loaded the bases on a single by Andrew Brown and walks to Xavier Scruggs and Nick Derba. With two outs, pitcher Nick Additon was down in the count 1-2 before lining a single into left field two score two runs to give Springfield a 7-3 lead. It was Additon's first hit of the season.

Tulsa answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 3rd as Scott Beerer doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by Bronson Sardinha to cut the Cardinals lead to three runs, 7-4.

Additon would go out for the 5th as allowed a lead off double to Mike Mitchell. After a fly out moved Mitchell to third, Jordan Pacheco grounded out to short to score Mitchell from third to get Tulsa within just two runs, 7-5. Additon would exit the game after the fifth allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Ramon Delgado came in out of the bullpen and pitched a scoreless 6th before running into a bit of trouble in the 7th. After a lead off walk, Mike Mitchell sacrificed the runner to second base. Delgado then walked Jason Van Kooten before inducing an inning ending double-play off the bat of Jordan Pacheco to keep the Cardinals in front 7-5.

Jason Buursma came in out of the Cardinals bullpen in the 8th to try and quiet the Tulsa offense, but he ran into immediate trouble after allowing two straight singles then walked Jeff Kindel to load the bases. Matt Repec came to the plate and on an 0-2 pitch lined a two-run double into left center field to tie the game 7-7. Blake King would be summoned from the bullpen and got a fly out to shallow right field for the first out. King then intentionally walked pinch hitter Anthony Jackson before striking out Mike Mitchell for the second out of the inning. Jason Van Kooten then came up and battled against King before drawing a walk forcing in the go ahead run. Jordan Pacheco followed suit and drew a walk to bring home yet another run making the score 9-7 Tulsa.

In the 9th, Springfield got the lead of batter on thanks to a walk to Matt Carpenter, but Andrew Brown flied out to deep center and Aaron Luna and Xavier Scruggs struck out against closer Stu Pomeranz to end the game with a 9-7 loss.

Springfield will finish their four game series with the Tulsa Drillers at ONEOK Field on Friday night. In game four, the Cardinals will send right hander David Kopp (12-4) to the mound against left hander Brandon Durden (5-11) for the Drillers. Game time is at 7:05pm.

The Cardinals playoffs hopes are still alive and well as they have secured the second best record in the North Division and the only way the Cardinals would not go to the post season is if the Tulsa Drillers win the second half outright. NW Arkansas swept the Arkansas Travelers in a double header putting the Naturals up 3 games on the Drillers in the division with only four games to play.

Should the Cardinals make the playoffs, they would host games three and four of the best of five game divisional series at Hammons Field on September 10th and 11th. For ticket information please visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, online at www.springfieldcardinals.com or call (417) 863-2143.
