Sporting KC Acquires Cameron Porter in Trade

July 12, 2016 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Sporting Kansas City News Release

Sporting Kansas City acquired 23-year-old forward Cameron Porter from the Montreal Impact on Tuesday in exchange for defender Amadou Dia. Porter will be added to the Sporting Kansas City roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.

"Cameron is a player who we feel has a lot of upside," Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said. "He can play multiple positions in the attack and it will be good to have another young player to develop. We also want to thank Amadou for his contributions to our club and we wish him the best in Montreal."

Montreal selected Porter with the 45th overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. He played five matches during his rookie campaign, including two MLS appearances and three games in the CONCACAF Champions League knockout stage.

Porter scored one of Montreal's most important goals in club history on March 4, 2015, netting a 94th-minute equalizer against Mexican side CF Pachuca in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals. His first professional tally, scored before a crowd of 38,104 at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, sent the Impact to the semifinals and allowed the club to eventually finish runners-up in the tournament. Porter suffered an ACL tear to his left knee two weeks later and missed the remainder of the 2015 season.

A native of Centerville, Ohio, Porter made his 2016 debut on June 4 and started four matches this past month for USL club FC Montreal.

Porter played collegiately at Princeton University from 2011-2014, recording 31 goals and 13 assists in 67 appearances. While at Princeton, Porter was a First-Team All-Ivy League selection on two occasions and earned NSCAA first-team all-region honors as a senior. He led the NCAA with 15 goals during his final college season, landing 2014 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year accolades.

Dia, 23, joined Sporting Kansas City as a first round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. The left back tallied three assists in 37 appearances for the club across all competitions.
