Spokane Indians News Release

SPOKANE, WA - The Force was strong with Sal Mendez (2-1) on Friday night. Spokane's southpaw starter - making his first start at home this season - guided the Indians to a crucial 4-3 win over the Volcanoes in front of 6,813 fans at Avista Stadium for Stars Wars Night & Post-Game Laser Light Show presented by 93.7 The Mountain, Sports Radio 1510 KGA NW Sports Talk, and The Current.

Mendez looked to be in trouble early as he allowed a two-run homer to Salem-Keizer slugger Bryan Reynolds in the first inning. He settled down after that though, pitching four more scoreless frames while striking out five batters with just one walk. Tyler Ferguson pitched three no-hit innings of relief and Kaleb Fontenot picked up the save as he struck out the side around a pair of hits in the ninth.

Spokane's offense did all their damage in just one inning. After Luis Terrero was hit by a pitch to start the fourth, Seth Spivey brought the crowd to their feet with a long home run over the No-Li sign in right-center. Stephen Lohr then drove in Darius Day with a double to the gap and scored on a Brallan Perez single to round out the scoring.

Lohr finished 2-for-4 while Spivey, Perez, Terrero, Josh Merrigan, and Carlos Garay each picked up one hit in the win. Spivey's two RBI gave him a total of 21 which is tied for second in the Northwest League.
