Spitfires Down 67's with Overtime Win

OTTAWA, ON - Daniel D'Amico's overtime goal completed the comeback for the Windsor Spitfires, as they came from behind to beat the Ottawa 67's 4-3.

It gave the Barber Poles a weekend split at the Arena at TD Place.

The 67's were able to pull away early with two goals on the first two shots of the game.

First, another newcomer to the 67's roster added his first as a Barber Pole. Ottawa native Merrick Rippon ripped home a wrist shot from the right side of the slot, beating Michael DiPietro on the 67's first shot of the contest. The goal was the second of his OHL career.

Then it was Austen Keating gathering a pass in the slot and collecting his second goal in as many games for a 2-0 Ottawa lead at 5:16.

Windsor would find a way back into the hockey game, however. They scored three unanswered goals, starting with a low shot from Igor Larionov that handcuffed Olivier Tremblay at 14:28 of the first.

They scored again in the first minute of the second, and then despite a spirited penalty kill that saw Ottawa kill off a lengthy 5-on-3, the Spitfires took the lead late in the frame on a Chris Playfair partial break.

He picked the right corner on Tremblay at 18:38 of the second, putting the Spitfires in the lead going into the last full period of the afternoon.

Ottawa would tie the game when Keating picked up the garbage on a shot by Kody Clark and deposited his second goal of the afternoon. That forced the game into overtime.

2:36 into the extra period, D'Amico's goal ended the game. A lengthy video review was conducted to determine whether the play was offside, and was confirmed as a goal by linesman Pat Smith and video goal judge Jeff Johnston.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

Head coach André Tourigny

"I didn't like our second period. From about the 12-minute mark in the first, to about the end of the second, I felt we were short in our defensive play. We were a little risky and loose in our defensive structure and we paid for it. But it was a really good third period and just one bad shift in overtime."

On his team's progress "I believe we're the second youngest team in the league. If you outshot your opponent nine times out of 12, I believe it's because you're doing good things at some point. It's not as bad as it looks sometimes. So, we have to realize that we're almost there."
