Saginaw, Michigan - The Saginaw Spirit are proud to announce prior to Saturday night's home game against the Sarnia Sting the leadership group for the 2018-19 season. Head Coach Troy Smith has named Minnesota Wild prospect Damien Giroux the team's 20th captain in franchise history, while naming Detroit Red Wings prospect Brady Gilmour and D.J. Busdeker alternate captains.
"Damien deserves this honor," said Smith. "He is the consummate professional that comes to the rink every day with a smile on his face and a willingness to work. He leads by example and has earned the respect of his teammates and the coaching staff."
Giroux, 18, enters his third OHL season after becoming the Minnesota Wild's fifth round selection in the 2018 NHL Draft. The Sudbury, Ontario native was a part of last season's leadership group, serving as an alternate captain. Giroux takes over the captaincy from the departed Keaton Middleton, who signed a professional contract with the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League this week.
Gilmour, 19, is a fourth-year centerman for the Spirit and a former first round pick in the 2015 OHL Priority Selection. This is Gilmour's third season as a part of the Spirit leadership group, serving as an alternate captain since the 2016-17 season. Gilmour was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL Draft.
Busdeker, 18, enters his second full season with the Spirit in 2018-19, after being signed as a free agent in November of 2016. The Dexter, Michigan native is the all-time leader in goals, assists, and points at the Detroit Compuware Under-15 midget level scoring 95 points in 64 games. This is Busdeker's first year as a member of the Spirit leadership group.
