Spirit Host Storm on United Way Night at the Dow Event Center
September 29, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, Michigan - There's much to be said of the Saginaw Spirit's quick rise in becoming one of the more offensive skilled teams in the OHL, as five goals were scored in two of the last three games, including Thursday's road opener in Windsor.
Now, putting everything together will be the key for success in the early stages of the season.
The Spirit return to the Dow Event Center tonight before a three-game road stand, hosting the Guelph Storm, who are coming off a 6-2 win over Owen Sound yesterday to erase a two-game losing streak. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
Saginaw enjoyed a quick two-goal lead in the opening 65 seconds against its West Division foe before scoring two more heading into the locker room at the first intermission. Five different players would find the net, including left winger Albert Michnac, whose six points lead the team.
Forwards Cole Coskey, Blade Jenkins and Jake Goldowski would all record their first goal of the year at the WFCU Centre while Nicholas Porco is tied with rookie Cole Perfetti for second on the team with two.
Goaltending saw Cameron Lamour receive his third straight start after pitching a 23 save and two-goal outing against the Soo Greyhounds in the home opener last week. Tristan Lennox, a first-round pick in the 2018 Priority Selection Draft, also made his OHL regular-season debut in the second period.
With seven NHL drafted players on the 2018-19roster, the Storm look to build off a Western Conference playoff birth last season, that saw them fall in six games to Midwest Division rival Kitchener in the opening round.
Of those seven players, all of whom were drafted in the fourth round or higher, including Ryan Merkley (San Jose), Nate Schnarr (Arizona) and Dmitri Samorukov (Edmonton). Schnarr leads the club in shots on goal (12) and assists (three), while sitting on top of the points standing along with Liam Hawel at five. Hawel has scored four times this season on just eight shots.
Anthony Popovich, making all three starts in net, has stopped 81-of-91 shots faced for a save percentage of .890. The former seventh round draft choice in 2015 had 31 of those saves came against the Attack.
Tonight, the Spirit will honor the United Way and it's volunteers in an on-ice ceremony prior to the opening faceoff of tonight's game. The Spirit Hockey Club is proud to participate in 'Project Independence', which is aimed to provide assistance in building the necessary equipment needed to make homes handicap accessible. The Spirit were happy to assist in the building of a handicap ramp on the home of Sally Vasquez earlier in the month of September.
