Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - After a moving tribute to the victims and heroes of the Boston Marathon, capped by a first pitch by Watertown Police Department Chief Ed Deveau, Sgt. John Pugliese and Sgt. John Maclellan to start the 2013 home season an impressive 5-1 win in front of 4,842 fans at LeLacheur Park.

Mario Alcantara spun five scoreless innings and Kendrick Perkins went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the Spinners attack.

After the pomp and circumstance was done, the Spinners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. With one out, Manuel Margot reached on a fielding error, taking second base. He promptly stole third base and came around to score on a two-out single by Perkins.

Lowell (2-0) extended the lead in the third inning after Cleuluis Rondon led off the inning with a single to short. After Tzu-Wei Lin walked, Margot singled to left to score Rondon and a two-out single by Perkins brought home Lin to put the Spinners ahead, 3-0.

While Mercedes cruised through the first five frames, the Spinners tacked on a pair of additional runs in the fifth inning against Zac Reininger. Lin reached on an error by Reininger to start the inning, advancing to second on a Margot single. After Carlos Asuaje struck out, Perkins doubled to left-centerfield scoring Lin. A Nick Moore sacrifice fly put the Spinners ahead, 5-0.

After five innings, Raynel Velette relieved Alcantara and ran into a bit of trouble. Back-to-back walks, compounded by a wild pitch, led to an RBI groundout before Velette got out of the inning with the Tigers trailing by four.

The two teams traded zeroes the rest of the way as the Spinners held on for the win, their second consecutive win to start the season.

Alcantara was flawless for the Spinners, allowing just two hits without walking a batter, striking out six. Velette allowed the one run on two hits and two walks in 2.2 innings, striking out one. Greg Larson closed out the win with 1.1 scoreless, hitless innings striking out one.

Perkins paced the offense, going 4-for-4, raising his average to .571 on the season. Margot added two hits and two runs, while Lin also reached base twice and scored two runs. Rondon's infield hit was the Spinners only other hit.

The Spinners welcome the Tri-City ValleyCats to town Thursday night for a three-game series. Simon Mercedes makes his United States debut when he gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Super Canaligator Bobble Head courtesy of Trinity EMS and Collins Dentistry for Children. A limited number of tickets remain available.
