Lowell Spinners News Release

NORWICH, CONN. - Another night, another one-run game for the Lowell Spinners in 2013. This time, Forrestt Allday was the hero, lacing a two-out, RBI single in the eighth inning to give the Spinners a 2-1 win over the Connecticut Tigers Saturday night at Dodd Stadium.

With the win, the Spinners increased their lead over Williamsport in the wild-card standings to a game and a half and gained a game on Tri-City to move within 3.5 games of the Stedler Division leader.

Lowell (21-16) opened the scoring in the fourth inning as Tzu-Wei Lin laced a single into right field and Kevin Mager followed with a double to deep right, scoring Lin from first to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Connecticut (16-23) tied the game in the fifth as first baseman Pat Leyland smacked the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall, his second home run of the year, knotting the score at one.

The Tigers had a chance to take a commanding lead in the seventh as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but Sergio Gomez and Joe Gunkel were able to work out of trouble, with Gunkel inducing an inning-ending double play on a very close call at first. Connecticut hitting coach Mike Rabelo was ejected after the play, as he stormed out of the dugout to argue the call.

The Spinners took advantage of that missed opportunity in the following inning as Nick Moore drew a two-out walk and stole second without a throw. Allday then dropped a single into the right-centerfield gap, and Moore, off on contact, rumbled around to score the go-ahead run.

Teddy Stankiewicz made his second start in a Lowell uniform and set all six batters down that he faced. Gomez continued his recent stretch of interesting outings, battling through four-plus innings of long relief, scattering seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Gunkel (3-0, 0.00), in his longest outing of the season, picked up his third win and has not been scored upon in all five of his appearances.

Mager added to his team-leading total with his 21st RBI and tied Lin for the team lead in doubles with seven. For Allday, he now has a six-game hitting streak and has reached base in all 11 games as a Spinner.

The Spinners head to Vermont for another three-game set in just two days, as they have a doubleheader scheduled for 5:05 p.m. tomorrow night. Mario Alcantara (2-2, 3.13) will get the nod in Game One, while rehabbing Francisco Tavares (1-0, 4.50) will get the ball in Game Two.
