Spikes Win 5-2 in 15 Innings

Hurst 3-Run Homer Lifts Spikes in 15th

GRANVILLE, WV - The Black Bears were defeated 5-2 by the State College Spikes in fifteen innings. West Virginia collected sixteen hits but only scored two runs in the loss.

Both West Virginia and State College received solid outings from their starting pitchers in Friday night's ball game. Daniel Castano went seven innings, struck out five and only gave up five runs for the Spikes. Beau Sulser tossed five innings and did not allow a run in his outing.

Both squads had a shutout going until the bottom of the sixth inning. Deon Stafford Jr. and Tristan Gray singled and were brought home by a standup triple by Sandy Santos.

The Spikes got on the scoreboard by showing some power in the top of the seventh inning. Zach Kirtley blasted a solo home run to left field in the seventh and Joshua Lopez hit a solo homer of his own to tie the game in the eighth inning.

The game was tied 2-2 until the fifteenth inning until the Spikes scored three runs to take a 5-2 lead. Scott Hurst blasted a three-run home run to put the Spikes ahead. The Black Bears (33-23) will begin a three-game home stand against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tomorrow at Monongalia County Ballpark.
