State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES FINISH ROAD SERIES VS. SCRAPPERS TONIGHT: The State College Spikes are set to finish off a three-game set against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers with their last last game on the 2013 schedule at Eastwood Field tonight. The Spikes and Scrappers split a pair of games at Eastwood Field earlier this year, and State College swept a three-game set from Mahoning Valley at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park from July 7-9. The Spikes are coming off a 4-2 homestand, and will return home for a two-game series against Auburn starting on Friday. State College is 37-40 all-time against the Scrappers, and 13-26 in games at Eastwood Field.

-LAST NIGHT: The Spikes fell twice to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Eastwood Field, with the Scrappers' 2-1 victory in game one and 1-0 win in game two each coming in the bottom of the eighth inning. Both contests were scheduled for seven innings. The opener ended on Paul Hendrix's bases-loaded walk, while the nightcap finished with Juan Herrera's bases-loaded sacrifice fly. State College was held to four hits on the night, two in each game. Jimmy Bosco notched the lone RBI for the Spikes with his single in the first game. State College got exceptional pitching efforts, with Jimmy Reed going a career-long six innings in game one with three strikeouts, Nick Petree delivering three shutout frames with five strikeouts, and Andrew Pierce striking out seven in 4 1/3 innings in the nightcap.

-BAUTISTA GETS BALL FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Juan Bautista heads to the hill for his sixth official start of the year for State College tonight against the Scrappers. Bautista is coming off of earning his first win with the Spikes after giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over six innings against Lowell on Friday. The Dominican Republic native also struck out six in the effort. Bautista has gone at least five innings in every outing this year, and started on Opening Night for the Spikes.

-SULSER SET TO START FOR SCRAPPERS: Right-hander Cole Sulser gets the ball for Mahoning Valley tonight in a change to the rotation. Sulser, the Indians' 25th-round choice out of Dartmouth in this year's draft, has made seven appearances, including three starts. The Saint Ysabel, CA native has faced the Spikes once already, giving up a season-high four runs in 2 1/3 innings for the loss on June 26. Sulser was named honorable mention All-Ivy League this spring after missing the 2012 college season due to Tommy John surgery.

The Tracy, CA native is also leading the Spikes with seven stolen bases this year.
