State College Spikes News Release

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Josh Lopez produced four hits, including a homer, and Bryce Denton went deep as part of a three-hit night as the State College Spikes used another 15-hit attack to defeat the Batavia Muckdogs, 13-7, on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Lopez netted his quartet of hits one night after Yariel Gonzalez accomplished the feat, with a trio of singles surrounding his seventh-inning solo homer. Denton started his evening with a solo homer and added two more singles.

Erik Garcia and Edwin Figuera also delivered multi-hit games, with Figuera knocking in three runs on the evening. The Spikes (3-2) have now collected 30 hits as a two over the previous two games.

A six-run sixth was the centerpiece of the State College outburst, helping to stretch the Spikes' lead after being tied 4-4 in the fifth. The Spikes also posted an 8-for-20 team hitting mark with runners in scoring position, helping them to their first series win of the year.

Spencer Trayner (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Spikes, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Trayner gave up two hits and struck out two batters after replacing starter Levi MaVorhis.

Prior to the game, Trayner and Gonzalez joined Ricardo Bautista, Matt Davis, Steven Farinaro, Mick Fennell and Danny Martin as Spikes honored for winning the 2016 New York-Penn League championship.

Batavia (3-2) reliever R.J. Peace (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs, one of them earned, on two hits and three walks over 2 1/3 innings. Peace struck out three batters on the evening.

The game was delayed 23 minutes at the outset by rain in the State College area.

Saturday, the Spikes hit the road for their first extended trip away from Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) in the opener of a three-game series at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio. Righty Sam Tewes (0-1) gets the ball for his second Spikes start, while the Scrappers are set to send southpaw Francisco Perez (0-0) to the mound.
