State College Spikes News Release

UNIVERSITY PARK - The State College Spikes took the rubber game of a three-game set from the Lowell Spinners on Thursday evening by the score of 4-1. Moises Robles (3-7) got the win for State College after tossing five shutout innings, scattering only three hits. Despite leading the league with seven losses, Robles has now allowed only one run over his last 16.2 innings of work.

State College and Lowell waited through a 46-minute rain delay before getting started, but once the action was underway the Spikes wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the first, Justin Byler got a two-out rally started with a walk, and the recently named NYPL All-Star came all the way around to score on a perfectly placed double from Andrew Walker to open the scoring at 1-0.

After a scoreless second inning, the Spikes got back to work in the third with another single run. James Barksdale, who was making only his second start in the last two weeks, started the inning with a walk and a stolen base before moving to third on a Brian Friday single. Barksdale would bring home the second run of the game later in the inning on Keanon Simon's sacrifice fly.

The Spikes would round out their scoring in the fifth and it was the speed of the lower half of the order that would manufacture the offense. Marcus Davis started the frame with an infield single before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. After Erik Huber walked, James Barksdale scored Davis with an RBI groundout to make the score 3-0. Barksdale would later steal second and score on Brian Friday's RBI single to push the Spikes lead to 4-0 after six.

The Spinners ended the Spikes shutout bid in the seventh inning, when Jorge Jimenez started Daniel Moskos' second inning of relief with a solo home run to right field to trim the Spikes lead to 4-1, but that is how the game would end. Jorge Charry struck out the side in the eighth to set up Ronald Uviedo for his eleventh save of the year.

The Spikes will head to Tri-City tomorrow evening for the first of three before taking a three day break for the 3rd Annual New York-Penn League All-Star Game in Hudson Valley. LHP Tony Watson (6-1) will toe the rubber for State College. The team will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday, August 17th to take on the Williamsport Crosscutters.
