Southern League Names Hitter, Pitcher of the Week Honors

June 29, 2009 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

MARIETTA, GA -

Hitter of the Week

BRYAN PETERSEN, OF, JACKSONVILLE SUNS

Petersen was the quintessential leadoff hitter for the Suns last week, reaching base 17 times in six games to help Jacksonville to a 5-2 second half start. After an 0-for-5 performance on Monday, Petersen rattled off five consecutive multi-hit games, including two three-hit games. He raised his batting average from .267 to .288 during the week and also drove in six runs and scored five times. He led the league with a .567 on-base percentage, setting the table for teammates Lee Mitchell and Scott Cousins, who combined for 17 RBI. He also paced the circuit with a .480 average (12-25) and 12 hits. Petersen, a native of Northridge, Calif., was a fourth round draft pick in 2007.

Pitcher of the Week

RYNE REYNOSO, RHP, MISSISSIPPI BRAVES

Reynoso was a workhorse for Mississippi last week, pitching a league-high 15.2 innings in two dominant victories. On June 23, Reynoso bested league wins leader Lucas Harrell by yielding just three hits in eight scoreless innings as the Braves downed Birmingham 6-1. He was nearly as dominant in his next start, striking out six and allowing one earned run in seven and two-thirds innings in a 6-3 win over West Tenn on June 28. The consecutive victories have pushed Reynoso's season record to 5-4, and the Bellevue, Id., native currently sports a 3.31 ERA, which ranks tenth in the league. After a rocky start to the 2009 campaign, Reynoso has allowed more than three earned runs in just one of 10 starts since May 5.
