Sounders FC Caps Earth Week with Sunday's Parley Match against Minnesota
April 20, 2018 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, WASH. - This Sunday, April 22, as Sounders FC faces off against Minnesota United FC in a nationally televised contest on ESPN (1:00 p.m. PT / YouTube TV, KJR 950 AM, El Rey 1360 AM), the team celebrates the close of Earth Week wearing adidas Parley kits, as previously announced. This is the second year that Seattle has participated in the collaboration between adidas, Major League Soccer and environmental network Parley for the Oceans, having been selected as one of four MLS teams to don the unique, sustainably-sourced jerseys last season before the project was expanded to the entire league in 2018.
Sounders FC was one of four MLS teams selected to wear adidas Parley kits in 2017 (shown here). This season, the program has been expanded across the league, with all teams wearing either a white, non-dye colorway or a dark grey, carbon colorway over Earth Day weekend. (Robert Mora / Sounders FC)
A limited number of the 2018 jerseys - created from upcycled marine plastic that has been reworked into fabric for apparel - have been made available for fans to purchase this month, and can be found at the CenturyLink Pro Shop. Fans also have two different options to enter for a chance to win a 2018 adidas Parley jersey.
Continuing efforts to promote environmentally friendly choices, adidas is encouraging fans to bike to the match this Sunday and utilize the free bike valet located in the North Lot at CenturyLink Field. Participants who choose to bike and park in the bike valet are able to enter to win a match-worn and autographed adidas Parley jersey and adidas Parley Boost shoes.
Fans can also stop by The Ninety before heading to the stadium, where they can enter a drawing for a Parley jersey that is being given away at halftime. Also in The Ninety on matchday, Lexus is scheduled to be stationed with a special augmented reality hologram display. Fans can stop by to test their skills juggling a soccer ball using Lexus hologram technology.
At the match, attendees can take advantage of a custom Snapchat lens to celebrate Earth Day. The lens, designed by adidas, MLS and Parley for the Oceans, is available to Snapchat at stadiums hosting games this Earth Day weekend, features a massive 3D whale jumping out of the background to create a "big splash" for fans.
Sounders FC is also welcoming to the game 800 parents and youth from certified Washington Green Schools - schools that have achieved standards in set sustainability goals - as a reward for the students' efforts to bring environmentally friendly practices to their places of learning. Students from Washington Green School Maple Elementary are serving as the Xbox Dream Team for the afternoon's match, while a group from John Rogers Elementary has been selected to receive a special post-match visit from a Sounders FC player.
Before kickoff, the Rave Green honors its U-17 Academy squad for its victory in the Generation adidas Cup Premier Division championship, held on March 31. The team won Group A of the Premier Division and advanced to the final after defeating the Montreal impact 2-1 in the semifinals, and proceeded to snatch the result over New York Red Bulls Academy 2-1, bouncing back after an early Red Bulls goal to even the score on a goal by Marlon Vargas, which was followed by the title-clincher by Alec Diaz late in the match.
