Sound Tigers Score Late in 2-1 Loss to Springfield

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.- The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, proud AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, received a late goal from Kane Lafranchise in the third period, but fell to the Springfield Thunderbirds, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Webster Bank Arena.
The setback moved Bridgeport to 1-1-0 on the new season, while the Thunderbirds earned their first win in franchise history.
After a scoreless first period, Springfield took the lead on Mackenzie Weegar's first goal of the season early in the second frame. Weegar received a pass from Brody Sutter shortly after Anthony Greco exited the penalty box and beat Sound Tigers' goaltender Stephon Williams, stick side, for the goal at the 3:50 mark.
Midway through the second, the Thunderbirds had two opportunities to maximize their lead, but were unsuccessful on a pair of penalty shots just 37 seconds apart. Kyle Rau and Rihards Bukarts each had a chance against Williams, but both were denied.
After multiple opportunities from both teams in the third, Springfield scored again to double its lead. At 8:52 of the final frame, Brody Sutter tipped Weegar's shot from the blue line over Williams' glove for his first of the season.
The Sound Tigers only tally came courtesy of Lafranchise at 16:48 of the third period. Lafranchise received a pass from Josh Ho-Sang and skated down the left wing before beating goaltender Reto Berra for the 2-1 final. Ho-Sang's assist was the first point of his professional career.
Bridgeport finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 8-for-8 on the penalty kill.
Springfield outshot the Sound Tigers 25-18. Williams (0-1-0) made 23 saves in the loss.
