Sound Tigers Lose 3-2 In Overtime In Providence

January 16, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Bridgeport Islanders News Release

PROVIDENCE, RI - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-2 in overtime on the road to the Providence Bruins Friday.

Despite 44 minutes in penalties, the teams combined for just one power play during the first two periods, but Providence took advantage as Andre Savage opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season 12:09 into the second period with Sound Tigers Defenseman Mattias Timander serving a hooking penalty. Kevin Dallman and Peter Metcalf assisted on the opening goal. Savage doubled the P-Bruins' lead to 2-0 with his second goal of the game, also assisted by Metcalf, with 3:24 left in the middle frame.

Sound Tigers All-Star Goaltender Wade Dubielewicz kept it a two-goal game by stopping Martin Samuelsson on a penalty shot with 1.4 seconds left in the second period. Referee Dean Morton awarded the penalty shot when Timander tripped Samuelsson who was on a breakaway. The Dubielewicz stop turned out to be huge as the Sound Tigers rallied with a pair of third-period goals 2:37 apart to tie the game.

Even Cheverie made it 2-1 with his third goal of the season, all in the last two games, off assists from Rob Collins and Eric Manlow at the 9:46 mark. Cheverie is now on a two-game goal streak while Collins and Manlow are now on two-game assist streaks. Manlow is also on a three-game point streak.

Derek Bekar, who was reassigned to Bridgeport by the Islanders today, tied the game with 7:37 left in regulation with his 15th goal of the season off assists from Ben Guite and Manlow.

However, the Bruins' Ivan Huml wristed a soft shot through traffic and past Dubielewicz 2:34 into overtime for his eighth goal of the season off assists from Savage and Milan Jurcina to win the game.

Savage was the first star of the game, Huml was the second, and Manlow was the third. Providence was 1 for 3 on the power play while the Sound Tigers were 0 for 2. The P-Bruins had a 27-22 shots on goal advantage despite being outshot 11-7 in the third period and 2-1 in the extra session.

Dubielewicz finished the game with 24 saves while Providence Netminder Hannu Toivonen had 20 stops.
