Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates failed to complete the season sweep over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, dropping the regular season finale by a 4-1 score. Darian Dziurzynski had the lone goal for the Pirates in the loss.

Darian Dziurzynski opened the game's scoring, redirecting David Rundblad's shot on a delayed penalty to give the Pirates lead 1-0 just 3:50 into the game. Boris Valabik picks up an assist on Dziurzynski's 10th professional goal. The Sound Tigers struck back, as former Lewiston Maineiac Kirill Kabanov tied the game at 5:47 of the first period. Matt Donovan and Aaron Ness had assists on Kabanov's second goal of the year. A pair of former UMass Lowell Riverhawks would then give the Sound Tigers the lead, with Riley Wetmore notching his first professional goal with 2:25 left in the first. Scott Campbell, who assisted on Wetmore's goal, would get one of his own with 1:10 left in the period, and the Pirates trailed 3-1.

Chris Rawlings made his AHL debut to start the second in relief of Mike Lee and stopped all 8 shots that he faced in the period. While there was no scoring, the period was extremely physical, with three fights in the span of 1:33 starting with a Brett Hextall bout against Andre Pedan, followed by Matt Clackson's second fight of the afternoon and finished with Dziurzynski dropping the gloves. The second period ended with the Pirates trailing 3-1.

Rawlings kept the Pirates in the game, making several fantastic saves during the first period. However, Brock Nelson would break through, setting the Sound Tigers single season goal record with his 25th goal of the year 3:47 left, giving Bridgeport the 4-1 lead. With the win, the Sound Tigers prevent a Pirates sweep of the season series, while the Pirates loss cements them in the 6th spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Pirates start the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday, April 27th at the War Memorial at Oncenter in Syracuse with a 7:30 pm puck drop. The Pirates will face the Crunch in a best of five series, and have not faced Syracuse since 2010. Radio and television coverage of the game will be announced at a later date.
