Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Sound Tigers forward David Ullstrom scored two power play goals, including the game-winner 1:20 into the second period as Bridgeport defeated the Adirondack Phantoms 3-2 at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday night. With the win, the Sound Tigers have recorded points in 15 of 16 games to open 2012 and improve to 26-18-3-2. Adirondack falls to 23-25-2-1.
The Phantoms jumped on the board late in the first period on a shot that Anders Nilsson may have never seen. Adirondack forward Harry Zolnierczyk skated with the puck behind the Sound Tigers net all the way into the left circle. The rookie forward sent a soft backhander on the ice through multiple players that made its way between Nilsson's legs, and the Phantoms led 1-0 at the 16:13 mark of the period. Adirondack extended the lead to two goals on the power play when Shane Harper knocked a rebound past past Nilsson with 17 seconds left in the opening frame, and the Phantoms had a two-goal advantage after 20 minutes.
The Sound Tigers jumped on the comeback trail midway through the second period courtesy of an aggressive forecheck from their top line. Rhett Rakhshani raced deep below the Adirondack goal line to free the puck and feed Casey Cizikas in the slot, who roofed the puck over Phantoms netminder Jason Bacashihua for his 15 goal of the season to cut the deficit to one. Ullstrom evened the score on the power play with 3:05 left in the second period. Jon Landry held the puck above the left circle and fired through the slot to Ullstrom in the right circle, who one-timed the puck home to tie the score 2-2.
Ullstrom gave the Sound Tigers the lead on an identical play 1:20 into the third period, one-timing a Matt Donovan feed in the right circle off the left post and in to put Bridgeport ahead for good.
Nilsson made 26 saves to earn his 13th victory and seventh straight win, and the rookie netminder has not lost since Dec. 16, 2011. Ullstrom's two goals give him 18 on the season, eclipsing his career-high of 17 last season. The Sound Tigers are now 14-1-0-1 since the start of the 2012 calendar year.
The Sound Tigers will continue their homestand tomorrow afternoon when they host the Hershey Bears at 3:00 p.m.
