Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA-- Rancho Cucamonga kept pace with the first-place High Desert Mavericks, taking a 4-1 decision over the Lake Elsinore Storm in the opening-game of a four-game series on Thursday night at the Diamond in Lake Elsinore.
Andrew Sopko, ignored by all-star voters, solidified his case as a late addition to the California League's All-Star Team, as he went six scoreless innings to improve to 7-0 and lower his ERA to 3.04.
The Quakes scored their first runs of the game in the fourth inning off of Storm starter Brett Kennedy (1-4). Tim Locastro led off the frame with a single, and Devan Ahart doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out. A couple of batters later, Edwin Rios ripped an RBI single to right field, scoring Locastro and making it 1-0 Quakes. The very next hitter, Yusniel Diaz, hit an infield single to score Ahart and Rancho led 2-0 after four innings.
Rancho Cucamonga added another run in the fifth inning. Jordan Tarsovich doubled with one out. Later in the inning with two out, Ahart knocked Tarsovich in with an RBI single to make it 3-0.
Lake Elsinore got on the board in the eighth inning, scoring off of Quakes' reliever Daniel Corcino. Luis Urias and Josh VanMeter led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and then two batters later, Franmil Reyes lined an RBI single into center field, scoring Urias to cut the Quakes' lead to 3-1. Corcino walked Luis Tejada to load the bases with two out, but got Edwin Moreno to fly out to center field to end the threat.
Rancho tacked on a big insurance run in the ninth inning off of Storm reliever Martires Arias. Michael Ahmed led off the inning with a double, and scored on a Garrett Kennedy single to make it 4-1.
Jeff Malm earned his first save in a Rancho uniform, striking out two of the three hitters he faced in a perfect ninth inning.
Still just one game out of first place, Rancho (36-24) looks for a third straight win on Friday night, sending Yaisel Sierra (3-3) to the mound in game two of the series. Lake Elsinore will counter with right-hander Zech Lemond (1-1), with first pitch scheduled for 7:00pm.
On Monday, June 13th, the Quakes will return to LoanMart Field for the final three home games of the first half, as they host the Lancaster JetHawks in a three-game series. Monday will be a Social Media Monday, as fans that follow the Quakes on all the social media platforms could win great prizes. Game time on Monday is set for 7:00pm and tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or rcquakes.com.
