Madison Capitols News Release

GENEVA, IL - A delayed call turned into a fluke deflection and an empty net goal against as the Madison Capitols fell to the Chicago Steel, 7-2, at Fox Valley Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Madison (2-3-0-0) is tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with four points. Chicago (4-1-0-0) is ranked first in the Eastern Conference with eight points.

At 3:07 of the second stanza, there was a delayed penalty on the Steel and goaltender Dryden McKay headed to the Capitols bench. Madison defenseman Chase Pilawski gathered the puck at the right point of the Steel zone and snapped a wrist shot. The puck deflected off a Chicago player who slid in front of Pilawski. The puck then slid down the ice and into the open Capitols net to give the Steel a 3-0 lead. The goal was credited to left wing Robert Mastrosimone.

The Steel struck first with left wing Aaro Vidgren's second goal of the season at 13:04 of the opening frame. Skating on the power play, right wing Samuel Bucek sent the puck from the right point over to defenseman Derek Daschuke at the left point. Daschuke fired a shot that McKay made the pad save on, but Vidgren was stationed on the back door to bury the rebound and give Chicago a 1-0 advantage.

Left wing Brett Budgell doubled the Steel's lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the season at 16:54 of the first period. Right wing CJ Walker carried the puck behind the Capitols net from left-to-right. As he was heading to the right corner, Walker sent a pass to Budgell in the slot. Budgell side stepped McKay and sent the puck over the goal line. Center Nick Abruzzese also assisted on Chicago's second goal of the night.

Defenseman Misha Song buried his first USHL goal at 7:37 of the second period. Forward Kamil Sadlocha carried the puck down the left wing and battled with some Steel players behind Chicago's net. Sadlocha regained possession of the puck to the right of the net and found Song at the left point. Song wound up and fired a slap shot from the point that traveled through traffic and beat Steel goaltender Oskar Autio to bring the score to 3-1.

Center Anthony Callin brought the Capitols to within one tally with a shorthanded goal at 14:06 of the middle frame. Callin chipped the puck into the neutral zone to Sadlocha who carried the puck down the left wing and into the Steel's territory. Sadlocha fed the puck back to Callin in the slot who flipped a backhand shot between Autio's legs for his first goal of the season and a 3-2 score.

Just 46-seconds later, Vidgren picked up his second goal of the night to give Chicago a 4-2 lead. The Steel were skating on the power play when Stucker found Daschke at the right point of the Capitols zone. Daschke sent a shot in on McKay, which was saved, but Vidgren was on the right doorstep to pick up the rebound and his third goal of the season at 14:52 of the second period.

After a Capitols goal by left wing Alec Broetzman was waived off due to a charging call, left wing Jack Dugan scored a power play goal to give the Steel a 5-2 lead at 11:10 of the third period. Left wing Blake McLaughlin held the puck in the right face-off circle before finding Dugan open in the left circle for a one-timer that beat McKay for his sixth goal of the season.

McLaughlin scored two goals just 14-seconds apart to give the Steel a 7-2 lead. Center Austin Magera carried the puck down the right wing and sent a pass to McLaughlin who was streaking into the left face-off circle. McLaughlin one-timed the puck past McKay's blocker for his first USHL goal.

Just 14-seconds later, Bucek stripped the puck away from Capitols defenseman Colin Felix in the left face-off circle. Bucek found McLaughlin between the hashmarks for a one-timer that found the back of the net.

McKay (2-3-0) took his third loss of the season by stopping 17-of-24 shots. Autio (3-0-0) earned his third win of the season while stopping 22 saves on 24 shots.

Madison was 0-for-4 on the power play. Chicago went 3-for-3 with the man advantage.
