Waterloo, Iowa-Kevin Charyszyn's goal 8:01 into the first period on Saturday boosted the Waterloo Black Hawks toward a 5-3 victory against the Omaha Lancers while making a difference in the lives of homeless men, women, and children in northeast Iowa.

When Charyszyn snapped his shot into the net, it triggered Waterloo's first-ever "Socks for Sail" event, spurring the Young Arena crowd of 2,772 to toss hundreds of new socks onto the ice. "Socks for Sail" was presented by Chick-fil-A of Waterloo, who also provided 500 "mini moo" plush toys to toss onto the ice at the same time. On Monday, the Black Hawks revealed that the effort far surpassed the organization's stated goal to collect 500 pairs of socks.

"Black Hawks fans contributed 1,197 pairs of socks which we hope will warm the feet and the spirits of those in need," revealed Vice President of Sales and Marketing Joe Greene. "There was a lot of scoring Saturday and it was an exciting game, but for so many people, that first goal Saturday will stand up as the one which was truly important. I want to thank both Chick-fil-A for their commitment to the community and Black Hawks fans for showing their generosity yet again."

The socks - which came in a rainbow of colors and sizes from infant to adult - are being sorted for House of Hope and The Cedar Valley Hospitality House, which each serve the homeless of Black Hawk County.

The Cedar Valley Hospitality House is a daytime shelter in Waterloo open year-round from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The organization provides morning and afternoon meals, access to shower and laundry facilities, clothing, social advocacy, and other services from its location at 1003 Mulberry Street.

House of Hope is a two-year transitional program for homeless single women with children, offering support and personalized case management to help them change their lives and sustainably achieve independence and self-sufficiency.

"Throughout the season, Black Hawks fans have shown their generosity time and again," said Greene. "Whether we're talking about collecting thousands of school supplies in the autumn, bidding on specialty jerseys for breast cancer patients and veterans, or digging down to find something to contribute for UNI's Dance Marathon, our fans are always there to do their part in making the Cedar Valley a better place."

The Hawks are on the road this weekend, returning to Young Arena to host the Sioux City Musketeers on March 11th. The will reveal their final specialty jersey of the season - to be worn on March 18th benefitting Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity - later this week.
