Sobolewski Shines as Wings and Bulls Tie Monday

March 25, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

As the final week of spring training begins, Mark Sobolewski continues to make his case to be the starting third baseman for the Red Wings when they open the 2013 season at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo next Thursday, April 4.

Sobolewski went 2-for-3 Monday with an RBI and two runs scored as the Red Wings and Durham Bulls played to a 2-2 tie in Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Twins selected the 26-year-old in the minor league phase of the 2012 Rule V draft after a breakout offensive season a year ago. Sobolewski, also named the best defensive third baseman in the Eastern League last year, hit a career-high 20 home runs and knocked in 59 runs between New Hampshire (AA) and Las Vegas (AAA) in 2012. His breakout year came on the heels of an offseason in which he was diagnosed with and beat melanoma.

This spring, the former fourth round pick of the Blue Jays in 2008, hit .250 (6-for-24) with a pair of doubles in 15 Grapefruit League games with the Twins.

Kyle Davies made the start for the Red Wings Monday and tossed three scoreless innings without allowing a hit as he attempts to crack the Wings rotation after not pitching professionally during the 2012 season.

Blake Martin allowed a run on two hits in three innings and Michael Tonkin yielded one run on a hit in a pair of innings.

Luis Perdomo kept the game tied at two by tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Perdomo is a likely candidate to open the season in the Red Wings bullpen after a strong 2012 campaign in which he made two separate stints with the Twins after opening the year at Double-A.

The Red Wings return to the Lee County Sports Complex in Ft. Myers on Tuesday for an afternoon tilt against the Norfolk Tides.

Twins Notes:

The Twins announced today that they have optioned catcher Drew Butera to Triple-A Rochester. In addition, they have reassigned catcher Dan Rohlfing, outfielder Brandon Boggs and infielders Jeff Clement and Ray Olmedo to minor league camp.

The Twins now have 31 active players in camp: 18 pitchers (4 non-roster), 2 catchers, 6 infielders and 5 outfielders (1 non-roster). The Twins also have two players on the disabled list: Scott Diamond (left elbow) and Anthony Swarzak (ribs).
