February 13, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Fort Worth Brahmas
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Arizona (February 13) - The Brahmas defeated the Arizona Sundogs by the score of 7-1 Wednesday night behind John Snowden's record-breaking, five-goal performance.
Snowden became the first Brahma in the 15-year history of the franchise to score five goals in a game. Terry Menard, Stephane Larocque and Mark O'Donnell previously held the record, each having scored four goals in a game during the 1997-98 season when the Brahmas were still members of the Western Professional Hockey League. Snowden is only the second Central Hockey League player in the last 10 seasons to score five goals in a game and the first since Chris Minard of the San Angelo Saints did it during the 2003-04 season. The five-goal outing is one score shy of the CHL record, done by Luc Beausoleil, Paul Jackson and Joe Burton.
The Everett, Washington native also became the first player in franchise history to score four goals in a single period, accomplishing the feat in the second period of Wednesday's contest. Snowden notched even-strength goals at 1:25 and 10:02 and power-play scores at 11:14 and 15:27. The veteran winger now ranks tied for 13th in the league in scoring this season with 44 points (22 goals, 22 assists).
Austin Mayer added the other two scores for the Brahmas. For the rookie, it was his first professional multi-goal game.
Kevin Petovello scored the lone goal for the Sundogs at the 18:09 mark of the second period.
Kristofer Westblom made 17 saves on 18 shots to improve to 17-5-3 this season. The rookie's 17 wins rank second among Central Hockey League goaltenders. Arizona netminder David Brown struggled mightily, allowing seven goals on 32 shots in 44:02. Adam Russo stopped all three shots he faced in relief of Brown.
Fort Worth outshot Arizona 35-18. The Brahmas also outplayed the Sundogs on special teams, converting on two of four power-play opportunities. Arizona went 1-for-3 on the man advantage.
Wednesday's win completed the sweep of the Brahmas five-game road trip. The team's five-game win streak is a season long. The win also placed Fort Worth in a tie for first place in the CHL with the Allen Americans. The two Metroplex rivals will meets Friday, February 15 at the NYTEX Sports Centre in a battle for sole possession of the top seed. The game is set for 7:45pm with a pre-game ceremony honoring the career of Chad Woollard to begin at 7:30pm. The first 800 fans in attendance will receive a free Woollard trading card.
