Snappers Ride Six-Run First to Blowout
July 14, 2017 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release
The Snappers posted a crooked number in the first inning and never looked back on Wednesday night, as they downed the Lugnuts 11-1 in Lansing. The six-run first was much needed: Beloit entered play having scored three runs or fewer in seven of its last eight contests. That included a stretch in which the Snappers scored just three runs over five games.
It was a rude awakening for Lugnuts starter Kyle Weatherly, who made his first career start for Lansing on Wednesday, as he was unable to escape the first inning. He served up a leadoff double to Trace Loehr, who was driven in two batters later on Luke Persico's single. Miguel Mercedes followed with a single, and then Kyle Nowlin deposited the first pitch he saw over the left center field fence for a three-run blast. Jesus Lopez added an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0 before Jason Goldstein scored on third baseman Mattingly Romanin's error.
The Snappers tacked on another in the fourth on J.C. Rodriguez's RBI single. Loehr notched an RBI triple in the fifth followed by a Persico RBI single to give the Snappers nine. Several late-game miscues by Lansing's defense, which made four errors on the night, led to Beloit's final two runs.
The offensive outburst was more than enough for Beloit's pitching staff. Starter Miguel Romero, on a strict pitch count, threw three scoreless frames with a walk and two strikeouts. He eventually gave way to Seth Martinez, who gave the Snappers another sterling relief performance. He allowed a run on five hits over five innings while walking one and striking out three. Mitchell Jordan closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Beloit had several multi-hit performances on Wednesday. Persico, Nowlin and Goldstein each went 2-for-5 while Loehr collected four hits. Lopez went 3-for-4 in his first game with the Snappers since 2016.
