Snappers Break Tie in 9th, Beat Dragons 4-3

April 29, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Dayton Dragons News Release

Beloit, Wisc.-Adam Bryant's single through the middle with the bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the ninth inning broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the Beloit Snappers to a 4-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons. The loss dropped the Dragons to 12-12 on the season. They will need a win in the series finale on Monday afternoon to earn a split of the six-game road trip.

Beloit's ninth inning rally began when Jairo Rodriguez singled up the middle against Dayton reliever Kyle McMyne (2-1). McMyne then walked Adam Pettersen as pinch runner J.D. Williams advanced to second. Wang-Wei Lin followed by bunting the ball to the left side. Dragons third baseman Junior Arias fielded the bunt, but his throw to third base to try to get the lead runner was late and left the bases loaded with no one out. Bryant then hit a hard grounder through a drawn-in infield to bring in the winning run.

The Dragons trailed 3-0 before they tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Danny Vicioso singled to center to start the rally and went to second on Juan Silva's single. A wild pick-off throw advanced Vicioso and Silva to second and third with no one out, and Sean Buckley's ground out to shortstop brought in Vicioso to make it 3-1. Kyle Waldrop singled to left to score Silva and pull the Dragons to within one at 3-2. Junior Arias singled to left to move Waldrop to second, and the Dragons pulled off a double steal to leave runners at second and third. Nick O'Shea singled to left to bring in Waldrop and tie the game as Arias went to third with one out. But Beloit reliever Michael Tonkin got Theo Bowe to ground to the mound as Arias held at third for the second out. Juan Perez walked to load the bases, but Ryan Wright grounded out to first to end the threat.

In the top of the ninth, O'Shea singled with two outs and went to second on a wild pitch, but Bowe struck out to retire the side. Bryant's hit in the bottom of the ninth broke the tie.

Beloit got the scoring started in the fourth inning when Danny Ortiz lined a double under the glove of Dragons first baseman Sean Buckley to drive in two runs and make it 2-0. Ortiz hit a solo home run to left field in the sixth to give Beloit a 3-0 lead.

Dragons starting pitcher Tanner Robles worked the first five innings, allowing five hits and two runs with one walk and four strikeouts. James Allen followed Robles and worked three innings, allowing five hits and one run with one walk and two strikeouts. McMyne worked the ninth inning and was charged with the loss.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Silva and O'Shea both went 2 for 4.

The Dragons will play at Beloit on Monday at 12:00 noon (EDT) to wrap up the road trip. Stalin Gerson (1-1, 3.74) will start for Dayton against Beloit's Jason Wheeler (2-0, 3.00). The next home game is Wednesday, May 2 against the Lake County Captains.

Notes: Three of the five games played on the Dragons current road trip have been tied in the bottom of the ninth inning.
