Smokies Push Past Barons 11-5

The Birmingham Barons got out to an early 3-0 lead before dropping game two of their series with the Tennessee Smokies 11-5 Sunday afternoon.

The Barons got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning courtesy of a RBI single by Marcus Lemon that plated Ryan Leonards giving the Barons a 1-0 lead. Birmingham added another run in the top of the fourth when Ryan Leonards reached on a Smokies error that allowed Joey DeMichele to cross the plate making it 2-0 Barons. In the top of the fifth inning Keenyn Walker reached on another Smokies error and scored on a RBI single by Courtney Hawkins that extended the Birmingham lead to 3-0.

Barons starter Blair Walters took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out four over 4.2 innings. Euclides Leyer struggled in relief of Walters allowing three runs on one hit with three walks while not recording an out. Connor Kraus recorded the final out in the fifth inning but struggled to start the sixth walking the first three batters he faced before being pulled. Kraus was charged for three earned runs on one hit with four walks.

Colton Turner made his Barons debut taking over for Kraus in the sixth. He threw a scoreless inning allowing one hit while recording two strikeouts but did allow the three inherited runners to score. Brandon Brennan tossed a perfect seventh inning and Connor Walsh pitched a scoreless eighth striking out one while allowing one walk.

The Barons would add a fourth run in the sixth inning after catcher Chris O'Dowd singled and later scored on a Hunter Jones sacrifice fly which made it 11-4. Birmingham added another run in the top of the eighth courtesy of a RBI ground out by Hunter Jones that scored Chris O'Dowd trimming the deficit to 11-5.

Right handed pitcher Spencer Adams will get the start tomorrow in Kodak, Tennessee as the Barons continue their road trip against the Tennessee Smokies. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm ct.
