Smokies Fall to Lookouts Thursday Afternoon, 6-3

KODAK, Tenn. - For the second straight game, the Tennessee Smokies found themselves falling behind to the Chattanooga Lookouts and were unable to overcome a deficit falling 6-3 Thursday afternoon. The loss, in front of 4,001 on Safe Kids Health and Awareness Day, was the Smokies fourth straight loss and drops their 2013 record to 2-5.

The Smokies and Lookouts were tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the second until first baseman Justin Bour walked to lead off the inning. Third baseman Christian Villanueva doubled to center field, scoring Bour, giving the Smokies a 1-0 lead. Villanueva was tagged out at third base trying to turn a double into a triple.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Lookouts first baseman Chris Jacobs singled to center field. Jacobs moved to third after a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. Catcher Dashenko Ricardo singled, scoring Jacobs.

The Smokies regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with Villanueva striking out, but reached first on a wild pitch by Lookouts starter Chris Reed. Singles by right fielder Johermyn Chavez and catcher Jair Fernandez scored Villanueva. With runners on second and third, the Lookouts intentionally walked shortstop Jonathan Mota, loading the bases to face Alberto Cabrera, who struck out, ending the Smokies threat.

Chattanooga took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning, when Ricardo hit a two-run home run off Cabrera.

Cabrera (1-1) finished is second start of the season after six innings where he allowed four runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out five.

The Lookouts would add two more insurance runs in the seventh inning off Smokies reliever Marcus Hatley.

Leading off the bottom of the eighth inning, Smokies second baseman Arismendy Alcantara singled and later stole second base, his second steal of the season. Bour hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Alcantara after he reached third on a wild pitch.

The Smokies and Lookouts will play Game Three of their five-game series at 7:15 p.m. on Friday night at Smokies Park. Chattanooga will send righty Andres Santiago (1-0, 0.00) and Tennessee will counter with lefty Eric Jokisch (0-0, 1.50). Friday will feature the Smokies first Fireworks Friday on Jackie Robinson Night.
