Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. -- A night after being shut out, 2-1, the TinCaps scored a run on Sunday, but just a run in a 2-1 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.

West Michigan (8-8, 47-36) broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single to left field from Will Allen off left-hander José Castillo. The cleanup-batting first baseman brought in Rashaud Brown from second base as the throw from Fort Wayne (7-11, 43-45) left fielder José Carlos Ureña sailed over the head of catcher Austin Allen. Brown had reached with a one-out bunt single and advanced to second on a single by Will Maddox.

The TinCaps got the tying run to second in the top of the ninth but were unable to tie the game against Adenson Verastegui (S, 3). Fort Wayne went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base.

Allen had tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to right-center field -- his sixth long ball of the season. However, that was all the visitors could muster against Whitecaps starter Sandy Baez (W, 5-7), who went eight innings, striking out six and not issuing a walk.

Fort Wayne received a strong start as well from righty Austin Smith, who turned 20 yesterday. Smith held West Michigan to only one run, which came on a second-inning sacrifice fly, across five frames. J.C. Cosme followed with two scoreless innings.
