Smith and Smyth Set Table for Newby

April 21, 2013 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

After falling, 10-0, Friday night in San Antonio, the RockHounds turned in a "complete" effort to defeat the Missions, 4-1, at Nelson Wolff Stadium in the Alamo City Saturday night.

Murphy Smith's quality start was backed by relievers Paul Smyth and Kyler Newby. Smith scattered seven hits over 6.1 innings, walking one and striking out six. Smyth earned a hold, going 1.2 innings with three more whiffs, bringing his season total to 15 (with no walks) and Newby picked up his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Key, two-out RBI singles by Jeremy Barfield, Anthony Aliotti, D'Arby Myers, (and Chad Oberacker's bases loaded walk, also with two down) gave the 'Hounds all the offense they would need.

The defense was (wait for it .... wait for it) tremendous, highlighted by Darwin Perez' run-saving play to end the sixth. Ranging to his right to the edge of the outfield grass behind the bag at second, Darwin snagged a hard grounder, hit the brakes, leaped in the air and pivoted, throwing to first in time to get the league's leading hitter, Jake Blackwood.

The RockHounds have now taken two-of-three at San Antonio, with tomorrow afternoon's two o'clock start remaining in the series.
