Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

FISHKILL, NY - The Renegades used small ball to pick up a 6-4 win over the Staten Island Yankees Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium under rainy skies. With the win, the Renegades increased the McNamara Division lead to two games over the Staten Island and won their eighth consecutive game over the Yankees.

After Hudson Valley starter Brock Burke and Staten Island starter Austin DeCarr matched each other zero for zero through the first 3.5 innings, the Renegades finally broke through in the fourth. Rightfielder Garrett Whitley was hit with a pitch to begin the inning. He stole second, then moved to third on a fly out. Whitley was still there following a groundout for out number two. That's when first baseman Nate Lowe stepped to the plate and ripped a single into leftfield to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead.

The Yankees came right back in the fifth. With two out and no one on, the Yankees put together three consecutive singles against Burke to tie the game. The final single by third baseman Drew Bridges scored rightfielder Carlos Vidal to give Staten Island their first run. The Yankees still had runners at first and third with two out, however reliever Spencer Jones came in for Burke and struck out designated hitter Timmy Robinson to keep the game tied.

Hudson Valley would retake the lead in the sixth. With one out, leftfielder Jake Fraley tripled to right-centerfield, then scored on a hit past a drawn in infield to right by third baseman Jim Haley. Earlier in the game, the Renegades twice were able to get a runner to third with one out, but were unable to get the run in.

Staten Island took their first lead of the game in the seventh. With one out, catcher Eduardo Navas singled then moved to second when a throw to second on a double play attempt from relief pitcher Spencer Jones sailed into centerfield. Second baseman Nick Solak followed that with a two-run double down the leftfield line to score both runners and give the Yankees a 3-2 lead.

However, the Renegades exploded with four runs thanks to some very small ball in the bottom of the seventh to take control of the game. Designated hitter led off the inning with a single before shortstop Bill Pujols laid down a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate. The catcher Navas, came up throwing to second but Perez beat the throw to put runners at first and second with no one out. After that, centerfielder Ryan Boldt grounded a ball to the third-baseman Bridges, who tried to put the tag on Perez going to third. Perez somehow avoided the tag, everyone was safe and the bases were loaded. That's when Whitley stepped to the plate and sent the ball slowly up the first base line on a swinging bunt. No one was able to field the ball for the Yankees as Perez scored, Whitley reached first, and everyone moved up a base to tie the game at three.

With the game tied, Fraley followed Whitley and laced a double down the rightfield line to score two runs and give Hudson Valley a 5-3 lead. Following a groundout with runners at first and second with one out, Lowe grounded a ball to the second baseman Solak who had to dive to stop the ball. He was able to get the out on Lowe, however Whitley got a great jump from third to score easily and the Renegades owned a 6-3 lead.

The Yankees tried to come back in the eighth. With two out and no one on, leftfielder Kendall Coleman walked then scored on an RBI double from Navas to make the score 6-4. However reliever Jayson McKinley got Vidal to fly out to left to end the inning. He would then strike out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

The Renegades had 11 hits including a 2-4 performance from Fraley who tripled, doubled and drove in two runs. Haley also went 2-4 with a stolen base and RBI, while Mastrobuoni and Perez each collected two hits with Perez scoring a run. Lowe drove in two runs while going 1-4.

The Yankees had six hits including two apiece from Solak and Navas. Each had a double with Solak driving in two runs and Navas driving in one and scoring another.

Getting his first professional win in relief for Hudson Valley was Spencer Jones (1-0) who allowed two runs in 2.1 innings while striking out three. The loss went to Yankees reliever Josh Roeder (2-1) after he allowed five runs on six hits in only two frames wiping out a solid outing by starter Austin DeCarr who allowed a run on four hits while striking out seven in only five innings of work.

Hudson Valley will head to Staten Island Friday to take on the Yankees in the second game of this three-game series. Right-hander Noel Rodriguez (1-1, 1.69 ERA) to the hill against a to-be-determined pitcher for the Yankees. Hudson Valley returns home for the finale of the series on Saturday. It will be Mother's Day at Dutchess Stadium and the game will be followed by a fireworks show. For tickets, call 845-838-0094 or go to hvrenegades.com.
