Slow Start Plagues IceMen in Wichita

January 27, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release

WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Thunder had lost nine straight games since their last win January 3 in Evansville against the IceMen. Wednesday at Intrust Bank Arena, the Thunder scored three first period goals en route to a 4-2 win over the IceMen to snap that skid.

The Thunder jumped out to a fast start, when Logan Nelson scored two goals 14 seconds apart on IceMen giveaways. Wichita then made it 3-0 when Kenton Miller finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play at 13:15 of the period. Danny Hobbs put Evansville on the board with 48 seconds left in the frame, as he stick-handled around a Wichita defenseman and floated a backhander up into the top corner of the net. David Shantz stopped eight shots for Wichita, while Evansville goalie Christoffer Bengtsberg stopped ten in the period.

Rookie forward Vincent Dunn cut the IceMen deficit to one when he snapped a shot off the crossbar and into the net 8:23 into the second period. It was Dunn's third goal in his last four games. Sebastian Strandberg had a chance to tie the game on a penalty shot, but was stopped by Shantz, as Wichita carried its 3-2 lead into the third.

In the final minute of a four minute power play, Nelson completed his hat trick at 6:06 of the third period when he beat Bengtsberg from the left circle to add insurance to Wichita's lead. Shantz stopped all 12 Evansville shots in the frame and 31 of 33 to earn his eighth win of the season. It was Wichita's first home win since November 25.

The IceMen finish off the road trip in Indianapolis with two games against the Indy Fuel at Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Both Friday and Saturday's games start at 6:35pm, with coverage starting at 6:20 back in Evansville on www.evansvilleicemen.com and ECHL TV.
