Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
WALDORF, Md. - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Long Island Ducks 7-5 with help of a second inning grand slam by Cesar Nicolas tonight at Regency Furniture Stadium in front of 4,415 fans. The Blue Crabs scored a total of five runs in the second and two more in the seventh to take a commanding five run lead heading into the eighth. Long Island would attempt a rally in the next frame, but there three runs wouldn't be enough as Southern Maryland was able to hold out with help of Jim Ed Warden, who earned his sixth save of the season in the team's 12th win of the season.
The Ducks would string together two runs in the top of the first off of a single, a Blue Crabs error and a double, but Southern Maryland would too string together some hits of their own in the second. Jose Julio-Ruiz and Cyle Hankerd hit back-to-back singles and Alvin Colina would hit a single to left field, scoring Julio-Ruiz for the 2-1 score. Brandon Jones's single would then load the bases for Cesar Nicolas who in turn cleared the bases with the team's and his first grand slam of the season, as the Blue Crabs took a 5-2 lead. Brian Barton's and Julio-Ruiz's hits in the seventh would add two more to the boards in the seventh, while the Ducks attempted an eighth inning rally scoring three runs, but would come up short. Pitcher Ian Marshall, who was the first to win three games this season, only faltered in the first, but took control through the rest of the game.
