Chicago Sky News Release

CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky has officially clinched the fourth seed in the 2016 WNBA Playoffs presented by Verizon. The Sky will tip off their fourth consecutive playoff campaign, brought to you by Magellan and Avison Young, in the second round of playoffs. The Sky earned a bye to the second round and their opponent will be determined once teams are reseeded at the conclusion of the first round.

The Sky will host the second round at 12 p.m. CDT on Sunday, September 25 at Allstate Arena. The game will air on ESPN2. With a win in the second round, the Sky will advance to the semifinals where they will face the Minnesota Lynx.

"We are excited to be heading into our fourth consecutive postseason. We've stuck together as a unit to accomplish one of several goals in clinching a playoff berth," said Sky President and CEO Adam Fox. "We will use our momentum from the latter part of the regular season in making a deep run for the championship."

In the WNBA's new playoff format, rounds one and two of the WNBA playoffs are single-elimination. The top two seeds receive a bye to the semifinals (third round) and the third and fourth seeds receive a bye to the second round. In round one, the fifth seed will host the eighth seed and the sixth seed will host the seventh seed. In round two after being reseeded, the third seed will host the lowest-seeded first round winner and the fourth seed will host the other first-round winner.

The winning teams in the second round single-elimination games advance to the semifinals to face either top-seeded Minnesota or second-seeded Los Angeles. This round is a best-of-five series with the higher seed having home-court advantage in Games 1, 2 and 5 (if needed). The lower seed will host Games 3 and 4. The WNBA Finals Champion is determined in a best-of-five series. The first two games are played at the home of the top seed, followed by two games (game 4 if needed) at the home of the lower seed. If the teams are tied at the end of four games, the fifth and final game is played at the home of the top seed.
