Sky Sox Suffer 5-1 Loss in Iowa

In the second game of their series, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox couldn't overcome an early deficit as they fell to the Iowa Cubs 5-1 at Principal Park on Saturday night.

In the second, the I-Cubs struck first off Sky Sox starter Wei-Chung Wang (1-3, 4.85). Taylor Davis singled to right to score Jeimer Candelario with the game's first run. Later in the inning, Juan Perez and Davis executed a double steal, allowing Perez to come home with the second Iowa run.

The Sky Sox got one back in the third as Andy Wilkins' double play ground out off Iowa starter Josh Collmentor (1-0, 1.93) scored Ramon Flores as the Sky Sox cut the deficit to 2-1.

The I-Cubs were quick to respond in the bottom half. Albert Almora Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to score John Andreoli, regaining the two-run lead for the Cubs. Another pair of runs in the inning gave Iowa a 5-1 lead after three that they wouldn't relinquish.

Collmentor pitched five solid innings to earn the win while relievers Armando Rivero and Corey Black combined to pitch the final four innings to give the Cubs their second straight win over Colorado Springs.

Wang pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while striking out four. He suffered his third loss with the Sky Sox.

Offensively for the Sky Sox, Nate Orf and Michael Reed each recorded a pair of hits while Reed stole his 20th base of the season in the loss.

In relief for the Sky Sox, Tim Dillard pitched two and a third scoreless relief innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four. David Goforth pitched a clean eighth inning to keep the Sky Sox down four.

The series between the Sky Sox and I-Cubs continues with a 12:08 p.m. MDT matchup at Principal Park on Sunday afternoon. Aaron Wilkerson (2-5, 6.08) is scheduled to get the start for the Sky Sox against Drew Rucinski (6-15, 6.17).
