Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox jumped out to an early lead, but couldn't hold it as the Reno Aces came back to defeat the Sky Sox 5-4 in 10 innings at Greater Nevada Field on Wednesday night.

The game started better than it ended for the Sky Sox. They got on the board in the first against Reno starter Edwin Escobar (5-2, 5.17). With one out, Nate Orf doubled to center. The next batter, Orlando Arcia, hit a double of his own to left to score Orf with the game's first run and give the Sky Sox a 1-0 lead.

Sky Sox starter Wily Peralta (0-3, 7.16) got into trouble in the first as a pair of runners reached base. But Peralta worked around the runners to strike out the side in the first to keep the Sky Sox in front.

In the second, Peralta retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts. He continued his strong outing by inducing Ildemaro Vargas to ground into an inning ending double play to keep the Sky Sox ahead by a run. Peralta struck out six in his first three innings.

With one out in the fourth, Michael Reed drew a walk, his team leading 53rd of the season. Keon Broxton followed with a triple off the center field wall to score Reed and double the Sky Sox lead. Reed came home to score a battler later on a sacrifice fly from Yadiel Rivera to give the Sky Sox a 3-0 lead after three and a half.

Zach Borenstein cut the Sky Sox lead to 3-2 with a double off that scored a pair of runs for the Aces.

The Sky Sox quickly got one back in the sixth. Orf led off with a double. After advancing to third on a fly out from Arcia, Orf scored on a sacrifice fly by Josmil Pinto to put the Sky Sox ahead by a score of 4-2.

With two outs in the sixth, the Sky Sox turned to Michael Kirkman out of the bullpen. In his best start since joining the Sky Sox, Peralta pitched five and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out 11 and walking just one batter. The 11 strikeouts are the most by a Sky Sox pitcher in a game this season.

After Kirkman got the final out of the sixth, Austin Ross came in and held the Aces scoreless in the seventh to keep the Sky Sox up a pair. Tyler Cravy came in for Colorado Springs in the eighth and struck out the side to keep the Aces off the board.

Damien Magnifico entered for the Sky Sox to try and finish the game in the ninth, but he struggled. Magnifico walked four in the inning as the Aces scored two runs to tie the game, and had the bases loaded with two outs looking to walk-off. But Magnifico struck out Kyle Jensen to force extra innings.

In the 10th, the Aces loaded the bases with nobody out against David Goforth. The Sky Sox reliever struck out the next two batters, and then Vargas stepped to the plate. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Goforth bounced a pitch in the dirt for a wild pitch, allowing Borenstein to run home from third with the winning run for the Aces.

The Sky Sox and Aces meet for the final time in the 2016 season on Thursday night. Aaron Wilkerson (0-1, 7.36) is scheduled to get the start for the Sky Sox. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. MDT at Greater Nevada Field.
