New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox rallied in the top of the ninth to force extra innings, then scored two runs in the 12th to defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs on Thursday night, 4-2.

The Zephyrs nursed a 2-1 lead into the ninth despite being held to two hits, but the Sky Sox responded with a two-out rally against Andre Rienzo.

Rienzo recorded two quick outs and was one strike away from nothing his fifth save, but Jake Elmore reached on a broken-bat infield single to keep the inning alive. After Rienzo walked Keon Broxton, Nate Orf ripped a single to left to score Elmore with the tying run.

In the 12th, Orlando Arcia and Andy Wilkins greeted Matt Tomshaw with a consecutive singles, and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Will Middlebrooks. Garin Cecchini then lifted a fly ball to right, and Arcia narrowly scored ahead of the throw from Kenny Wilson to put the Sky Sox in front.

Zephyrs third baseman Matt Juengel misplayed a grounder by Manny Pina to allow an insurance run to score, giving Colorado Springs a two-run cushion.

The Z's put the tying run on base with no outs in the bottom half of the frame against Sky Sox closer Damien Magnifico, who then bounced back to retire the next three batters to pick up his league-leading eighth save.

New Orleans was held to just two hits through the first 11 innings, but one of them was a two-run homer from Dan Black in the third to give the Zephyrs the lead.

Chris Reed, making his first Triple-A start since 2014, worked around five hits and four walks in five innings to hold Colorado Springs to one run, courtesy of Arcia's infield single in the top of the third.

Jaye Chapman (2-0) struck out five in three perfect innings of relief to earn the victory. Five Sky Sox pitchers combined to fan 14 Zephyrs hitters.

Tomshaw (0-1) was dealt the loss.

The Z's have lost seven of their last nine games heading into Friday's homestand finale. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
