Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - In the first game of an eight game road trip, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox got off to a good start, but it was the Omaha Storm Chasers who finished well to earn an 11-9 victory on Friday night at Werner Park.

In the first inning, the Sky Sox were quick to get on the board off Omaha starter John Lannan (2-1, 5.40). Four batters into the game, the Sky Sox took the lead when Hernan Perez drove in Orlando Arcia with a single to right. A couple batters later, the Sky Sox added to their lead when Manny Pina singled with the bases loaded to score Perez and Michael Reed. The next batter, Andy Wilkins, hit a sacrifice fly to score Jake Elmore and give the Sky Sox an early 4-0 lead.

The visitors added to their lead in the sixth, and again it was Pina in the middle of it. He singled with two outs to score Perez. Then with Wilkins at the plate, Pina stole second and advanced to third on an error. Wilkins drove him home with a double to give the Sky Sox a 6-0 lead in the third.

Unfortunately for the Sky Sox, the lead didn't last. Austin Ross (0-1, 5.40) got the start for the Sky Sox in a late change to the lineup and pitched two scoreless innings to start the night. Hiram Burgos (1-2, 10.64) entered the game in the third inning and gave up a three-run homer to Jorge Bonifacio that cut the Sky Sox lead in half.

The Storm Chasers rallied in to take the lead in the fifth off Burgos on a bases loaded double by Tony Cruz, followed by a double from Dusty Coleman that scored Cruz. An error allowed the fifth Omaha run of the inning to score, and that was the end of the night for Burgos.

In the eighth, Pina hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to get the Sky Sox within a pair. Over his last three games, Pina has 11 RBI and he currently has two straight games with four RBI.

The Storm Chasers scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth against Brooks Hall, and those runs proved to be costly for Colorado Springs.

With two outs in the ninth, Elmore hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left to cut the Omaha lead to 11-9. The Sky Sox were then able to put the tying runs on base, but couldn't bring them home as David Huff held on to get the game's final out.

The Sky Sox will look to even up the series in game two tomorrow night. Ariel Pena (0-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the season for the Sky Sox. The Storm Chasers will send Luke Farrell (1-0, 2.51) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm MDT at Werner Park.
