Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox ended their 2016 season with a 12-3 loss to the Iowa Cubs in front of 9,110 at Principal Park in a Labor Day matinee on Monday afternoon.

Leading off the game, Sky Sox right fielder Ramon Flores started off the game well with a single to left off Iowa starting pitcher Jordan Pries (7-3, 4.67). But the Sky Sox would not convert the hit into a run as Pries induced a ground ball double play from Lewis Brinson to end the inning unscathed.

In the third, Flores didn't need any help in getting the Sky Sox on the board. With two outs and nobody on, Flores crushed the second pitch of his at-bat deep over the left-center field wall for a solo home run, his first with the Sky Sox, to give his team a 1-0 lead.

After working quickly in the first two innings, Sky Sox starter Hiram Burgos (10-10, 4.40) got into a third inning jam. Munenori Kawasaki singled to lead off the inning, and John Andreoli walked a couple batters later to put runners on first and second. With Juan Perez at the plate, the runners executed a double steal to move to second and third with one out. But Burgos would not give up a run as he struck out Perez then got Matt Murton to ground out to leave the runners on base.

In the fourth, the I-Cubs would even the score against Burgos after missing in the third. With runners on first and second and one out, Kristopher Negron singled to center, scoring Tim Federowicz from second to even up the score at one.

The tie wouldn't last long. Garrett Cooper led off the fifth with a single. Andrew Susac followed with a double to deep center that scored Cooper from first to regain the lead for the Sky Sox. Burgos helped himself by hitting a single to right to put runners on the corners with one out. Flores followed with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Susac and gave the Sky Sox a 3-1 lead after four and a half.

Iowa was quick to respond in the bottom half. Candelario and Federowicz each singled to score runs to tie the game at three. A sacrifice fly from Taylor Davis gave the I-Cubs the lead, and then a double from Negron scored Federowicz to give the Cubs a 5-3 lead after five.

The rough fifth proved to be the end of Burgos' day. In his final start with the Sky Sox this season, Burogs pitched five innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out five. He suffered his 10th loss of the season.

Iowa added a pair of runs in the sixth against Sky Sox reliever Brooks Hall to extend their lead to 7-3 after six. In the eighth, the Cubs scored another five runs off reliever Stephen Peterson to extend their lead to 12-3 after eight.

In relief of Pries, Iowa relievers Jack Leathersich, Joe Thatcher, Gerardo Concepcion, and Jose Rosario combined to pitch the final three innings to finish off the win as the Cubs completed a four-game sweep to end the regular season.

Offensively for the Sky Sox, Susac and Flores recorded multi-hit games while Flores drove in a pair in the season-ending loss.

With the loss, the Sky Sox finish the season second in the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division with a 67-71 record. The Sky Sox organization is looking forward to celebrating their 30th season in Colorado Springs in 2017, beginning with Opening Day at Security Service Field on April 6.
