Sky Sox Beat Rainiers 7-5 in a Home Run Happy Affair
April 26, 2009 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox downed the Tacoma Rainiers by a score of 7-5 on Sunday afternoon in what shaped up to be a display of the long ball. 3,413 fans at Security Service Field witnessed a game that featured five total home runs to go along with twelve runs scored
Tacoma starting pitcher Gaby Hernandez struggled out of the gates giving up a leadoff double to Eric Young Jr. to start the bottom of the first inning and then giving up an RBI triple to Carlos Gonzalez. Matt Murton would drive in Gonzalez on the very next at bat on a single to give the Sky Sox an early 2-0 lead and extended Murton's hitting-streak to 12 games.
The Rainiers didn't strike until the second inning when Guillermo Quiroz belted a 2-run home run off the scoreboard in left-center field off of starting pitcher Josh Fogg (2-0) tying the game at 2-2. Fogg pitched fairly well with the few blemishes being a few home runs as he picked up his second win of the season.
In what would prove to be quite a back and forth battle, the Sky Sox would see the lead slip from them in the top of the fifth only to take it back in the bottom of the same inning. Tacoma's Prentice Redman gave the Rainiers the lead in the top of the inning with a home run to left field, his second in as many games against the Sox. The Sky Sox came back scoring two in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI triple off the bat of catcher Paul Phillips followed by an RBI single by shortstop Jonathan Herrera giving the Sky Sox a 4-3 advantage.
Tacoma would tie the game up at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning by way of another home run, this one from first baseman Mike Carp, the third homer given up by Fogg. The Sky Sox took back the lead 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Matt Miller led off the inning with a triple off reliever Eric Hull(3-1) and was driven in by teammate Kenny Perez who singled to center field.
Damian Moss would relieve Fogg in the sixth tossing two shutout innings giving up two hits.
The Sky Sox added some insurance runs in the seventh when first baseman Dan Ortmeier hit a two-run tater, his first of the year, off Hull giving the Sox a 7-4 lead.
Steven Register earned his third save of the season finishing out the ninth allowing a solo homer to Brian LaHair before shutting down the Rainiers by a final score of 7-5.
Game three tomorrow night will feature RH Jason Hirsh (2-1, 5.71) for the Sox versus LH Chris Seddon (1-1, 6.14) of Tacoma. First pitch is set for 6:05 PM.
