Skeeters, Smith Capture 7-2 Win
Sugar Land took a 7-2 victory over Bridgeport tonight in Game 2 of a four-game series at Constellation Field. With the win, the Skeeters improve to 8-11 at home and 17-21 in their 38 games this season.
Right hander Chris Smith (6.0,3,1,0,1,8) earned the win after dealing 6.0 innings, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits with eight strikeouts in the contest. This number ties a season best for his most strikeouts in a single game, while his 6.0 innings pitched also tied his season high with the Skeeters. Entering tonight's game, Smith's three wins ranked tied for second among Atlantic League pitchers.
Sugar Land plated one run in the second before taking a 3-1 lead in the fourth with the help of a solo home run from first baseman Nick Stavinoha (2x3). Stavinoha's blast marked his third homer of the season and his first since May 1 at Bridgeport. Shortstop Dominic Ramos (2x4) followed up that inning with a base-hit, moving to second on an outfield single by catcher Danny Lehmann (1x4). LF Ryan Langerhans (1x5) then drove a line drive to center field, scoring Ramos to extend Sugar Land's lead. The Skeeters offense plated two more runs in the fifth before center fielder Adam Godwin (3x4) brought Ramos and Stavinoha home in the seventh, giving Sugar Land a 7-2 advantage heading into the finale frames.
Left-hander Ben Kozlowski (1.0,2,1,0,1,0) entered the game in the seventh, allowing one run (unearned) on two hits, before Brian Broderick (1.0,1,0,0,0,1) threw a scoreless eighth inning. By doing so, Broderick extended his current streak to 13.0 innings without allowing an earned run, spanning his last 13 appearances since May 5. Righty Jared Wells (1.0,2,0,0,0,0) shut down the Bluefish in the ninth, allowing just two hits in the outing to preserve the win.
