January 18, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL) - Sugar Land Skeeters
SUGAR LAND, TX - The Sugar Land Skeeters have announced that former Skeeters pitcher Scott Kazmir has recently signed with the Cleveland Indians organization. The lefty has agreed to a minor league contract and accepted an invitation to Major League Spring Training with the Indians next month.
Kazmir, 28, joined the Skeeters in July 2012 and quickly cemented his role within the starting rotation. He started 14 games last season with Sugar Land, going 3-6 and collecting 51 strikeouts in 64.0 total innings pitched. Over eight minor league seasons, the Houston native owns a 13-24 record with a 3.66 ERA in 74 career minor league games.
Originally a first-round pick of the New York Mets in the June 2002 draft, Kazmir owns a career 66-61 Major League record with a 4.17 ERA over eight seasons with Tampa Bay (2004-2009) and Los Angeles-AL (2009-2011). The two-time American League All-Star has pitched in two Major League postseasons with the Rays (2008) and Angels (2009) and owns a 1-2 lifetime postseason record over eight games (seven starts).
This winter, Kazmir went 0-2 with a 4.37 ERA in five appearances with Gigantes de Carolina of the Puerto Rican Winter League, recording 27 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched.
"I'm really proud of him for sticking it out this season and I think he learned a lot about himself," said Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti. "He has definitely worked hard and deserves to be back with a Major League organization."
Opening Day for the Sugar Land Skeeters is scheduled for Thursday, April 18 against the 2012 League Champion Long Island Ducks.
