Six-run third lifts 'Hounds to 7-1 win over Missions May 22nd 2017, 01:52, by Bob Hards

A rain storm delayed the start of Sunday afternoon's game at Security Bank Ballpark. The RockHounds then brewed up a storm of their own, scoring six times in the third inning and going on to defeat the San Antonio Missions, 7-1

The early offense was supported by an outstanding start from Heath Fillmyer and equally outstanding defense with the 'Hounds turning three double plays in the game's first five innings to deny multiple San Antonio scoring threats.

Consecutive singles by J.P. Sportman, Max Schrock and Tyler Marincov (RBI) in the first gave the RockHounds a 1-0 lead.

Sportman later opened the third with a walk, Schrock followed with a single and a walk to Marincov loaded the bases against Missions starter Enyel De Los Santos. Viosergy Rosa 's sacrifice fly made the score 2-0 and Jordan Tarsovich followed with a two-run triple to the power alley in right center. Brett Vertigan 's flare single brought Tarsovich home for a 5-0 lead and Richie Martin launched a tremendous home run - into the wind - to the left field bullpen to cap the six-run rally.

The San Antonio bullpen absolutely shut the 'Hounds down the rest of the way. After a single by B.J. Boyd off Rafael De Paula, who relieved De Los Santos in the third, the only other 'Hounds baserunner came on a walk in the eighth inning and came against position player, Ty France .

The Missions, who erased a 10-1 deficit in the April 30 game between the teams in San Antonio, threatened in the second, third and fifth innings, with the 'Hounds turning double plays in each of those innings to snuff potential rallies. In the fifth, Noah Perio singled leading off and A.J. Kennedy sent a drive to deep right, with Marincov making a tremendous over-the-shoulder catch. The "thievery" was followed by a Luis Urias single with Martin, Schrock and Rosa then combining on a terrific double play to end the threat.

Fillmyer went 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing eight hits and one walk with one strikeout, successfully pitching to contact and being backed by the outstanding defensive effort.

The Missions took the potential shutout away in the ninth with three singles and a fielder's choice.

Quick Notes:

The Texas League South Division tightened up again with the RockHounds moving to within a game of San Antonio and the Corpus Christi Hooks - on the strength of a 5-0 win at Frisco - moving to within four games of the Missions.

The RockHounds are now 11-2 in their last 13 games at Security Bank Ballpark.

Against the rest of the Texas League, San Antonio's Enyel De Los Santos is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA. In three starts against the RockHounds, he is 0-1 with a 17.36 ERA. Of the 29 earned runs he has allowed this season, 18 have come against the 'Hounds.

Missions third baseman Ty France has been among Minor League Baseball's hottest hitters over the last month. Since being promoted from Lake Elsinore of the Class-A Advanced California League, France is hitting .474 (18-for-38) with the Missions. His appearance on the mound Sunday was to "spare" the bullpen, but don't be misled - he can pitch. France, in addition to his hot bat, was the winning pitcher in relief in the Missions' 16-inning win on Mother's Day, tossing a 1-2-3 inning against Frisco. He allowed only a walk Sunday and has not allowed a hit and has a 0.00 ERA in two appearances.

Viosergy Rosa (0-for-3, RBI, sac fly) saw his on-base streak come to an end. The 21-game stretch stands as the fifth-longest in the Texas League this season. Despite his hitless afternoon, Rosa has hit in 16 of his last 19 games (.348 with a .418 OBP).

Brett Vertigan (1-for-4, run, RBI) has now reached base in eight straight games (8-for-25, .320) and has also reached in 28 of his last 30 games. Vertigan also had a 20-game on-base streak between April 18 and May 11.

Max Schrock (2-for-4, run) has hit in six straight games (10-for-24, .417) and has hits in 19 of his last 22 games (30-for-90, .333).

The RockHounds and Missions conclude their four-game series Monday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Monday's games across the Texas League are the last of a 32-game segment of the schedule in which all games are divisional play.

After Monday's series finale, the RockHounds will play 12 games against North Division foes Arkansas and Northwest Arkansas. The 'Hounds will open that stretch on the road, beginning Tuesday at North Little Rock.

The series opener at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock is Tuesday evening (no travel day prior to the first leg of the trip), with all three games in the series set for a 7:10 p.m. first pitch.

The RockHounds then meet the Northwest Arkansas Naturals in a rematch of the last two Texas League Championship Series' (the clubs, remarkable, have met for the title four times since 2009). Game times at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale are 7:05 p.m. on Friday, 6:05 p.m. on Saturday and 6:35 p.m. on Sunday.

The 'Hounds next homestand begins (following a travel/off day on Monday, May 29) on Tuesday, May 30, with the Travelers and Naturals coming to Security Bank Ballpark, each in a three-game series.
